Subject: 45RFE; adjust shift points? IP: Logged
Message: Is there any way I can trick my 45RFE (02 4.7 4x4) into a sooner 2-3 shift?
Right now I have adjusted the TPS and installed HO cams. It pulls hard till 4800-5000 then drags ass for a second till it shifts, I find this a detriment to overall performance and passing because I know if it would shift a little sooner, it would be much better off.
Any tricks? Will the SuperChips tuner adjust shift points?

Message: i have the jet stage 2 in my 03 4.7 4x4 (5 speed auto) and that seems to help with the shifting a little bit

Message: I have the superchips tuner. It seems to have lowered my shift points a little. It used to shift at 5400, now its around 5200. The superchips also makes my auto shift much harder. My tires chirp between 1st and 2nd. The 2nd to third shift is also much improved. I also have the HO cams and the superchips makes a nice improvement with 93 oct.

Message: I have also done the TMS mod, which is I'm sure the same as what your Superchips has done. One simple wire-snip is all it takes for that ('02 and under 45RFE's only).
Hmm...with gas prices, I don't know if I want to fillup with 93 everytime and I can't spend any more money on my truck for a while.

Message: You can run the Superchips programmer on the 87 octane setting. You'll get the improved shifting and what seems to me a little more power. You don't have to run the high octane program to realize any benefits.
(91/93 octane being "high" is pretty funny. Many years ago regular was 96 octane.)

Message: Caulk04, Are you refering to the torque managment request mod??? If so how are you finding it??? I've been tempted but don't want a blown tranny. I'm throwing a lot more power at mine with a blower but i really want my 2-3rd shift to much "harder".

Message: I did a search for the TMR mod and read through a bunch of posts to find out for SURE which wire it was. I cut the wire close to the plug at the tranny computer (passenger headlight area). I'm almost sure it was yellow with a green stripe.
This won't work on anything newer than an 02' Dak (dunno about other vehicles) as after that they merged the tranny and engine computers so there is no wire to cut.

I love it, there is no difference untill you get at or very near full throttle shifts but when you nail it... WEEE! Shifts feel much better.
Torque managment does not make for a slow/sloppy shift, it is only cutting engine power during the shift to make them less perceptible to todays drivers who, for the most part want seamless acceleration. Not me!! 1-2 shift is excellent, really sets you back. 2-3 shift is the same way, but less profound because of the higher gear.
I love it and won't ever go back simply because its so much fun. I also feel it won't hurt the tranny at all because it only makes a difference at high throttle input.

Message: if you do the tmr mod don't cut the wire...just fit a small screwdriver in the wiring harness and you can back the entire wire out of the harness, then tape it off to the side. Cutting it just doesn't seem like the best thing to do.

Message: I was actually thinking of running an in line switch so i could turn it off at the track and switch it back when just driving around. SO you did not get any codes or anything from it??

Message: I did the TMS mod on my'00 and the only negative side effect to it is a slight engine ping right before the up shift. If I run 89 octane it doesn't happen, but I usually run 87. The tms retards timing right before 3/4 to full throttle upshift making the shift smoother, but on my truck (and probably most others)it felt more like the engine shut off for a second then came back on after the shift. I even had it back to the dealer a number of times when it was new because I though something was wrong with my tranny! In anycase, witht he tms wire cut, in normal driving there is no difference (that I notice anyways), but at 3/4-full throttle it does shift quicker and harder, but not like adding a shift kit. To me it now feels like a well tuned "normal" automatic should feel. I agree though, the shift points could stand to be changed.
