i have a 1978 440 from a new yorker w/ 8:1 comp, that is pretty much stock and i want to get some power out of it for cheap. i am going to get a performer rpm intake, 850 double pumper, and a cam. I want either a luanti voodo or a purple shaft, can u guys tell me which one is better (good vacume, idle, etc) and what lift/dur i should get. also since i want to raise the compression a little to where it is still regular unleaded how much should i shave the heads. any other suggestions would be great.
P.S. it will go in a 95 dak, is there any cheaper install kit/way other than schemacher? anyone who has done this swap before please give tips.

that motor is probably more like 7.5-7.8:1 compression. I'd stick with something in the 218-224 @.050 duration range.

I've read about the voodoo cams and it seems like it's lunati's answer to the comp xtreme cams (dual pattern, fast ramp, spread rpm band). If you are stuck on either those two, your motor will enjoy the dual pattern over the mopars single... those mopar cams are ancient and out of date. Honestly, i'd through a comp's XE268H in there... it would probably love it.

... and get a 800 cfm if you can.. the 850 would be more than enough (but still work).

i believe i cut my heads .072/.086 (bore side/head side) and i know that i had 7.6:1 compression, now it's 8.9:1. Since both sides of the head are cut, any B manifold fits my motor without modifing it.

with your low compression, stick away from cams that have a lot of duration and overlap, as this will cause you to lose any cylinder pressure you already have... you'll have absolutely no bottom end and you'll have a fun time trying to keep her running at a stop light.

i made a solid mount from the stock motor mount bracket on my genIII to the motor, drilled some holes and stuck a bolt thru it.

if you want some ideas, i'll try to find you some pix of a truck a guy did (genII)

The 413-440 BB intake manifolds will not fit the 361-400 BB engines.

i know that.. geez... lol

i stated that a B manifold still fit my motor because i have a B motor.. lol

check out the fifth word you highlited bold ;-)

if he were to cut his heads the same way i cut mine, he could still use any stock R/B manifold. The point was saying that i didnt have to chop up my manifold and hinder it useless to any other motor.

In other words the 440 is an RB motor, as in "raised" B - its taller. It uses an RB intake manifold.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way
