Subject: Single pipe or duel? IP: Logged
Message: Considering an after cat exhaust system. With the roll pan i have on the back, i am going to use a dump on the end so that the tip does not show. As far as any performance aspects go, should i go with a duel pipe or stay with a single pipe? Does the amount of pipes on the truck make a difference?

Message: The AMOUNT of pipes you have on your truck has no impact whatsoever on engine output.
What does make a difference is LENGTH of your exhaust pipe.

Message: So you would have a 1 inch pipe snaking around the bottom of the truck for 30 or 40 feet?
Dirk, there are no absolutes. A single pipe needs to be larger in diameter to deal with flow. A single 3-inch will outflow dual 2.25's. Typically, the single tube costs less, and there's one less muffler to buy. There's also added weight with duals. DUals tend to sound better, and offer higher performance possibilities if you're running a larger engine that'll move the air. Why split to two after the cat? Ultimately, it's your preference. I'd run a 2.25-2.5inch single for a stock, or near-stock setup.

Message: Well what exactly do you want out of the engine? Raw power for racing/towing? or just Looks? As far as size of the pipes go ill agree with gen1dak. Too big a pipe and you lose the scavenging effect. Which in turn reduces an engines effeciency at normal engine operating speeds (1500-3000RPM). If you go duels Put and H pipe that connects the pipes. This Increases effeciency and it does look pretty! Just my .02 on that last bit :-p

Message: Flowmaster has a nice formula for figuring exhaust pipe size and lenth. It can be found Here, technical info from Flowmaster
