I have heard that the computer "learns". What does it learn? And how and what is resetting the computer?

What year did the "learning" computer start?

Most cars with computer control are constantly learning, the main thing is idle, both air and fuel, depending on climate and atmosperic pres., on obd-1 cars(pre-96) you can clear the computer just by disconecting the battery for a few min., on obd-2(96 and newer) you need a scan tool to reset it, granted this is all generalized info...

Learning to idle? I guess I just dont get it. Whats so hard about idling that the computer has to learn it? Just how much learning is involved with these computers?

Chris, you can reset an OBDII computer the same way as an OBDI.

My son has a 1999 Dakota, that is currantly having this problem(relearning the idle). Last year, when he bought it, he left his lights on, and I recharged the battery. It kept dying when he slowed down. Someone on here gave me some advice as to get the computer to "relearn" the idle setting, and it worked. He recently left his lights on again, and I had to charge the battery once more. Other than disconnecting the battery overnight, I dont remember what else there was to do? The truck continues to die when slowing down or clutching. Can anybody shed some more light on this subject for me,,,Please???

The computer loses the idle info when the voltage is too low. After I changed the battery in mine, I had to keep it idling with the throttle for a couple minutes while it relearned the idle - try that.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

I wish I had some way to test and make sure replacing the battery would solve my problem? The battery seems fine, but I suppose I could have it checked. Anybody have any other ideas, before I relent, and take it to a (ugh) repair shop?
