Subject: 4.7L 11-1 or 8.6-1 IP: Logged
Message: Well it's decision time. Talk to Marty at KRC about pistons and cam's for the HO enigine I am building up. Appearently these engines can have 600HP squeezed out of them when done right. The block has been broken down cleaned up and primed for paint. Just need to decide on a high compression instant gradification 11-1 compression with custom cam or a very exspensive and probably year long project low compression high boost turbo set up.
I know with my built up bottom end (forged crank and forged pistons)I can squeeze out 500HP+ with a turbo set up but $$$$$. I have not seen any dyno numbers as far as a high compression piston and and custom cam combo but would hope it's close to 300HP with other bolt on's and PCM flash. Has anyone used the Ross piston's? My main concern is will they cause accelerated wear of the piston walls and reduced engine life? Any ways I will have to decide soon since I have engine parts all over the back of my shop.
Input about the Ross piston would be much aprreciated
BTW I swaped the HO cams into my current engine since I will be using a custom profiles in the build up and I must say I am very happy!! Anyone want to make an offer on some 4.7L HO pistons? they are 9.7-1 but probably (deffenitly) not worth the effort to change since the engine would have to be pulled.

Message: Why would the Ross pistons cause cylinder wall wear ? I could only think of three things that could cause this wear - bad rings, an oiling problem, or a short rod desigm like the chevy engines. Most mopars are a long rod design that is fairly easy on cylinder walls, especially with something like moly rings. I'd be wondering about the fuel octane requirements for 11-1, how high a compression can be run on premium fuel with this engine ? I thought most consider around 9.5 -1 with iron heads to be the max, maybe 10.5 - 1 with aluminum. That's just my guess; are they telling you these will work with pump premium, or are you building a racing motor ?

Couldn't KRC help.? They have the experience.

Message: I saw them speak more the likes of 450+ HP from a NA 4.7 using the 11:1 Ross, custom heads/cam, etc. I noticed the power rating was taken at 6800 RPM's too!
I'm tempted to build one of these after I pay off my truck!
In 4 more years!

Message: Thanks for the input. I was thinking the same thing about wear Kowalski and I would assume 11-1 compression isn't a problem since they sell these piston specifically for this motor but I will verify this with Marty. I am ging to ask KRC these things also but wanted some input that was from other sources and I happen to live on the west coat of Canada. If I can get over 400HP na with 11-1 compression that is almost for certain what I will do as long as it's still drivable.
