Subject: Terribly unstable idle- TB the cause? IP: Logged
Message: I replaced my 68mm TB on my '02 QC 4.7 with a 70mm F&B, and the idle now jumps from 400 to 1000 RPMs whenever I stop at a light. When I shift to park, the RPMs shoot up to nearly 1500, and barely drop down. I have hear other people say they experienced similar problems, but did anyone find a way to fix it? I'm tempted to just throw the stock 68mm back on so I don't have to deal with it. I keep getting funny looks from people that think I am trying to race them or something. Plus, I figure it isn't helping the great gas mileage I get. Thanks for any help.

Message: Exact same thing happened with my 70mm F&B. The guys at F&B gave me a few suggestion to no uvail. I ended up returning it for a full refund. Besides that I felt I lost a lot of low end power from it. Now Im goin to try a tru 68mm TB from the fastman.

Message: I've removed the "step" in my stock 68MM TB making it straight through. (Beats spending the $$$ for one)
My truck still idles rock solid.
There's my Throttle Body.
There's a pile of metal shavings I swept up where I was porting the TB to show how much metal I removed.

Message: The only suggestion I'd have is to check the TPS voltage. Should be around .68-.72 volts. Since there is no real adjustment you have to very carefully drill out the brass inserts so you can turn it to adjust it. After I did mine on my 02 it still idled a little rough for the first 50 miles or so till the computer got everything synced. Now it's fine.

Message: It would be very unusual for there to be a problem with the throttle body itself. It's a mechanical device that simply passes air. The problem is usually with one of the sensors, most likely either the TPS or IAC valve. One problem I've seen is where someone tries to clean the IAC and they manually move it in and out. This sometimes ruins it and it has to be replaced.
It's not unusual for the engine not to idle correctly after changing from one tb to another. However, this should last only a few minutes and you may have open the throttle a little in order to keep it running.
I've changed TB's many times and have never had a problem that lasted more than a few minutes. If it lasts longer than that, there is a good chance you have done something wrong.

Message: I thought I read some bad press about drilling out the TPS. The idle is driving me nuts, though, so I'm willing to try anything. I'm not willing to drill out my old TB to replace the F&B just yet. I need more information on the IAC Valve. I'm not familiar with that one. Thanks for the help guys.

Message: You didn't buy this on eBay did you? I was reading on another board about someone with an F&B that had the same problems. He finally gave up and auctioned it off.

Message: Not off Ebay- just your average guy who sells some of everything and gets wholesale prices from F&B. I know this has been a problem for others- wanting to hear of anyone who actually fixed it. The TPC sounds like the best bet so far. T-Racy, did you mean that you put on the F&B and had idle trouble, then it was fixed once you altered the TPS sensor?

Message: Have you tried resetting the PCM and letting it sit and learn to idle for a while? I recently put a new TB on a 2000 Z28. The instructions said to reset the pcm and let the car idle without touching the throttle until the car reached operating temp. I realize the dak works on a completely differnt system but it might be worth a try. On a side note after doing that the idle on the car was still unstable. It ended up being a bad plug on the map sensor.

Message: Could your accelerator cable be binding somewhere? Sounds unlikely, but you never know.
