my dodge manual says i have to use special mopar oil only in my 2001 nv3500,can anybody tell me why? also, what do you run in your stick? thanks for any replies.

I ran Valvoline Synthetic 10W-30 in my NV3500 but I didn't have an owner's manual and my Dak was a 95 but it worked great, nice pressure, smooth shifts.

Always remember Mopar is in business to make money so of course they are going to tell you that their fluid is the only one recommended for their trannies. They also want you to buy $17 a gallon antifreeze from them instead of $5.99 at your local department store. Most manual transmissions I've dealt with have used the same gear oil as the rear end in the vehicle. Anybody else know of any special oil that is required for this one we are talking about?

The NV-3500 is made by New Process/ New Venture and it was developed specifically for the Dakota V-8. New Venture strongly recommends that you use the lube that comes from Dodge. It has a specific spec/standard that must be in the lube or you will damage the gears over time. I cannot remember the abbreviation for the spec but the Dodge parts guy told me that this specific standard HAD to be in whatever lube I put in the tranny. The lube that is in the NV-3500 is not a GL-5 spec, otherwise you could just run any ol' motor oil. It was something like NT-9226 or some crazy spec like that. I looked on every bottle of every type of lube at all the parts stores, and NOBODY has that spec listed on the bottle. I guess I'm just going to leave well enough alone. You can always pick up a little using Mobil-1 75-90 in the differential, though.

Remember that oil can only do a few things. It can isolate parts, it can lubricate parts and it can transmitt force. They are probably adding some friction modifers to the oil and some extreme pressure additives. If you can determine if they have added extreme pressure additives or friction modifers you could closely match it to other products. I know that most synchros do not like friction modifers so it would be my guess that they have not added friction modifers. Gear lube is acid based so it could have something to do with the ph of the product. Motor oil alkiline. If they have used alot of copper in the transmission it may not like the high acidity of gear lube. Doesn't chevy use the NP/NV3500 in their truck. If they do then you know you can use syncromesh blue, or Texaco synthetic gear lube.
