How much performance is to gained by upgrading to a MSD ignition, blaster coil, and 8.5mm wires?

Also, ive heard that the MSD ignition box actually hurts performance on a basically stock engine, can anyone else back this claim up?

As far as HP and torque go - none. But the multiple sparks often improve low speed idle and tip in, and may improve starting.

As long as it's properly installed it won't hurt performance.

I have to disagree with Bob that it doesn't help hp. It depends on how good your system is to begin with. I installed it on my 93 Dak with the 318 and it helped alot. The 1/4 times decreased by .2 sec. and added about 2 mph to the trap speed. I didn't dyno it but it had to add hp to decrease the 1/4 times and add trap speed. BUT YOU HAVE TO REMEMBER TO GAP THE PLUGS WIDER TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE HIGHER SPARK VOLTAGE. I capitalized this because it is very important and is the reason many don't see any difference after installing the MSD. I found the optimum gap to be .045 after installing the MSD and Blaster coil. It also helped mpg about 1-2 mpg. And the engine idled smoother. Mopar's don't have the hottest spark. That's the reason you have to gap the plugs so tight at .035 so the MSD is a worthwhile investment. Oh and as far as it hurting performance on a stock engine. HOGWASH!! The only mods done to mine prior to the MSD was a Mopar perf. computer, K&N filter, and headers with duals. Stock my truck ran 15.65 @ 88mph. After just these mods it went 14.59 @ 94 mph.

I have the SS coil, 6AL, MSD 8.5mm wires and Autolite 3923 plugs, gapped to 0.045. It was a good mod for me. The biggest difference was the smoother idle and slightly quicker revs. It has not been down the track so I can't speak for 1/4 mile times. I would not do it if I had to pay retail for everything but I took my time and snagged several good deals on ebay. My 6AL is actually a black Mopar branded unit, which is pretty cool.

My mods are ported TB, K&N filter, M1, Mopar PCM.
