Subject: Rear end gears

Just wondering what is the "break-in" time on a set of gears??? Should you change out the fluid after that and should you use synthetic for the break in or would conventional be fine?? I'm currently running the red line synthetic. Switching from 355 to 410's.

The shop I went to didn't indicate any break in time on the gears. No fluid change needed. Two years later rear end still great. I went to 390s.

Yes, there is a brak in period, but it's really simple. Just drive it easy and gently for the first 200 miles or so.

The guy at my shop told me break in is 500 miles. No fluid change needed. Keep it at 60 mph on the highway for those miles and accelerate slower.

I guess i'll ask the guy at the shop. Just thought of another thing, do i need to flash the computer for any reason?? I have the 4.7 auto with a Kenne bell. I know it's not going to throw off my speedo but are the computer and the tranny going to think something's up??

Be easy on it for 200 miles and try not to travel at the same speed, keep going back in forth between like 60 and 70 or whatever speeds you commonly travel at.

I see other have found that the 3.55 gears are useless with the auto tranny, 4.7 combo. How much do 4:10 gears cost?

My 3.55's are not useless I would say. we could have worse LOL!

But I know what you mean. OD is GRUNT.
Even though I have plenty of low end grunt, I want the performance I'd get form the 4.10's myself. Future mod indeed.

Did anything need to be done to the computer so it recognized the gear change? Is the speedo off because of the gear change or is the speedo still correct?

Just wondering if anything needed to be modified in the computer to compensate for the new gears. Guess it might not have to be changed since the tone ring and rear tires are still going the same speed before and after the gear swap.

I think our trucks use the ABS sensor on the wheel or soemthing rather tahn at the output of the tranny.

I've actually never looked.

My bro in law just had to replace a sensor in his rear end on his RAM.

His ABS lights were on and his speedo would not move until he hit 20MPH.

I'm not positive, but I believe the tire size is the only thing that will effect the speedo. I have a superchips tuner and I can adjust the speedo by tire size. Just my input.

I looked at my rear a little bit ago. it DOES have the sensor ON the pumpkin. It's right next to where the bracket is where the brake lines tee to either side.

So in that case, only tires change speedo.

I had mine changed in my '02QC4.7 from 3.55 to 4.11; parts from Randy's Ring & Pinion. The off road shop by my house did the work, and told me to take it easy for about 500 miles, making sure to use the 4x4 on very LIGHT off road terrain. Then he told me to switch the fluid out again to make sure there are no metal shavings, etc., floating around. I figured for $60, it was probably worth the piece of mind. No computer issues or anything else. Pretty good mod, although I was expecting a slight increase in city MPG that didn't happen (10-15% decrease in highway MPG- expected and confirmed).

When a shop does a job. they ALWAYS tell you to "take it easy"

How many "break in miles" do you think engines and rear ends get before blasting down a race track???

The shop probably wanted you to do that to catch and PROBLEMS with the install before it created a BIGGER problem. like bearings, etc.

I'm easy on stuff long enough to tell it's ok. Then it's balls to the wall baby!!!

When I built my first engine, waayyyyyy back when, the machinist asked me to bring it over so he could check everything out. Check it out, yeah right....

The guy held the throttle wide open for a minute or two and drove the thing for 15 minutes like he just stole it. I was thinking,,, WTF are you trying do blow up my new engine. Well he was! After he had his fun he looked over and said, now you don't have to worry about the thing blowing up. If there's something wrong let it blow up!

I have used the same "break-in" test on several engines and never had a problem.

#1 Break in the cam
#2 Drop the hammer

When would you like to find out that there's a problem, right after working on the vehicle or months down the road....

You guys aren't making it easy to be easy on it!!! I'm only about half way through my break in period. Luckily it snowed up here (southern ontario) and its been raining ever since. No sense in goosing it anyway. I'm working my other job all week so i'll be adding about 40 extra kms a day. SHe'll be ready to go by friday. Hopefully so will the weather.
