K&N is one of the very few aftermarket manufacturers that actually takes their time with R&D and posting actual dyno results. Yes, a lot of manufacturers to b.s. your claims but stop bashing the legit ones!

Airaid probably gets a few HP, but if you increase the air much, you should also add a little more fuel. I added a ram air hood, and a Mopar Perf PCM, and gained 2 mph in the quarter. But, when I added headers/dual exhausts, I started to "lean" the engine, and lost 1 mph. (My mileage went from 14.5 to 16, but I lost low end power)
If you get an Airaid, try to make sure you have a hose, or something to get cool air to it, not just under-the-hood warm air. You might see a little change without a PCM change. (I had a Jet module once, and it did absolutely nothing) Moper Perf PCM would be better.

when i first got the airaid it only had the new filter. A few months ago i got around to gettin the tube as well. In my opinion the filter alone made throttle response a little better and made it sound cool. The tube, i dunno, but it made my fuel mileage get better, so that is a plus for me.

I've come to the conclusion that to see any gains from the cheap mods, ie: intake, exhaust, you have to drop in big mods that cost much more money than $20 or $100. New cams, the superchips, stuff like that. As someone said in an earlier post, they all compliment eachother.
