i have a 97 318, i've heard that the flowmaster 40 series is the loudest muffler you can get for this model. i've heard a magnaflow muffler on a 04 4.7, how much louder am i going to be able to go, if any by using a flowmaster 40 series as apposed to this magnaflow muffler. i'm looking to get the loudest muffler possible using 3" pipe

Hey if you want loud why are you bothering to put on a muffler at all?

Have you considerd a cherry bomb muffler?

A Cherry bomb "Glass Pack" would be best (for LOUD and flow) and cheapest.

A Magnaflow is NOTHING more than a glass pack in a muffler shaped housing that costs over twice as much as a Cherry bomb glass pack.

You are right that it is essentiall a glass pack, but the packing material is stainless steel, and doesn't wear out like a (fiber)glasspack. Also, the core through the muffler is peforated as opposed to fluted like glasspacks, this allows for better flow.

I've heard some flowmasters and they do seem a little louder at idle, but seem a little loud for me.

I couldn't be happier with my Magnaflow, it does get louder as you drive it some, its fairly quiet when brand new.

My Magnaflow has made me the happiest Dakota owner in the world. I have heard both Magnaflow and Flowmaster on the 03 Dakota with 4.7L and I will say that the Magnaflow came out on top. LOUD!!!! My neigbors hear me romping on it up the street but then when I granny pedal it, the truck is defenitely not as loud. Go Magnaflow!

Odyssey.. What magnaflow muffler (or system) do you have? I have a Flowmaster origonal 40 series (2 chamber) muffler and i want to try something different... All I have is the muffler on stock 2.5" piping, with a 3" tip.

I might also try a glass-pack for the hell of it :-) If I dont like it, I'm not out of that much cash..

I've got a Magnaflow AND Flowmaster system, in a sense, on my '01 4.7. The 2001's had pre-cats with 4 O2 sensors. My Dak has 2 1/2" pipes after the pre-cats, leading into a Magnaflow 2 1/2"-to-3" Y-pipe, a 3" Magnaflow (Carsound) high-flow converter, and Flowmaster 70 with 2 1/2" rear side exit duals. Getting rid of the restrictive 2" pipes leading into the tiny factory y-pipe and 2 1/2" converter really opened up the system. I've had the 70 series muffler for 100K miles. The recent changes after the pre-cats have helped the gas mileage about 1 mpg so far. The 70 sounds more like a 50 series now. '01 4.7 5-spd 3:92 RC, HO cams, TB port/polish, homebrew alloy air intake w/K&N drop-in/6" Fernco inlet, Bosch 4418, 17x9 w/LTX 255/55/17, 19-20 mpg.
