Subject: 2.5 turbo swap IP: Logged
Message: I have an 89 dodge dakota standard cab short bed. i was wondering if anybody knew of a site or someone i could contact about swapping a 2.5 turbo into my dakota. it already has a 2.5 but i was wondering how hard that swap would be? i know that chrysler 2.5 turbos came in daytonas and shadows but there was a van that had them too. also does it matter taking a engine from a FWD and putting it in the RWD truck. reason i ask is because someone told me i could just turn the engine 90 degrees and mount my factory transmission to it. any motor mount issues i should know about. thanks. jason

Message: From what I understand, yes, the 2.2 and 2.5 all have a common block.
Here are some good links.

Message: I have done a lot of studying on this subject and have found a little info. The main thing is the intake and exhaust manifolds. The intake would be pointing to the back when mounted in a Dakota and runs into the firewall. So you have to cut that elbow off plug the hole and weld it someplace else. I think the turbo would also hit the firewall or leave little room to run your intake pipe and such. Any engine after '88 will fit though I don't think they drilled the bosses out for the Dakota motor mounts. From '86 to '88 there was a tall deck 2.5. That from what I can tell was never put in a Dakota so it would not have the bosses for the motor mounts. I think the 2.2 was put in the Dakotas in '87 and '88 so you have that first year for the 2.5 in the Dakota. And I hope you know you can't just swap a turbo on your tbi engine you need the whole engine. Many things were beefed up to hold up to the power and heat. Like the valves, connecting rods, crank plus they had a different cam and lowered compression. There are other little things to but that is the main problems. If you go ahead with the swap let me know it should be very interesting.

Message: That is not the same engine rgathright. But is interesting. That is a jeep 2.5 that dodge put in the '96 and later dakotas to confuse us.
