Subject: tranny swap? IP: Logged
Message: ok. i have an 87 4wd 3.9 v6 with an auto tranny. i would like to eventaully swap the 3.9 for a older 318 (non magnum) and swap out the tranny for either an older 4 speed or a 5 speed.
now the questions are.
-which transfer case does the dakota have in it?
-did the 4wds come with 5 speeds?
-if so, whats was the tranny? (ax15?)
-318s and 3.9s have the same bolt pattern for the tranny, correct?
with that...
- will the ax15 just bolt right up to the 318 and the shaft into the transfer case? just find a 4wd 5 speed dakota and take out the clutch pedal assembly and everything else an swap it over if possible?
OR...
would i be able to run an older 4 speed setup out of, say an old ramcharger or ram150?
basically, im lookin to do a manual swap with out having to do a ton of extra work.
thanks

Message: now you're talking a lot of extra work. computers may be different. you're looking at mounting a clutch pedal, and all attachments, includinga different brake pedal possibly ( not too sure, but most cars require that to be done) an ax15 is a v6, not sure if it'll handle the HP and torque of a v8. IF IT were ME, I'd look for a v8 and tranny together... you're less prone to engine/tranny interference problems, and while at it, just look for a v8 manual TRUCK, and hack out the pedal assembly and clutch actuator parts too, since they'll all work with each other, and grab the engine wiring harness and puter too. it'll make the job ten times easier to do the homework and planning first, and keep the FIRST rule of mechanics in mind, the KISS rule, Keep It Simple, $hithead. I use that rule for myself everytime I jump into a new vehicle, and have been a tech for the past few years, dealing with numerous cars daily. the NEXT rule is to Work smarter, not harder! that directly affects me suggesting that you grab EVERYTHING that you plan to install from only ONE vehicle, since they all obviously interlinked with each other on the vehicle they were on... this also simplifies any replacement parts or repairs that you may have in the future... "HMMM, the engine was a 94, and the tranny was a 98, uhh... or was it the other way>?" you want it simple in CASE you have to turn it over to a mechanic later!! my history with cars involves aLOT of projects like this, from a Corvette motor and tranny install on a 1956 Chevy to a 302 conversion from a straight 6 on a 1965 Mustang, that involved brakes entire drivetrain, suspension, wiring and too much other stuuf to list, but the vehicles came out LOOKING and functioning as if they WERE origially v8 cars. A hack job will stand out easily, as it will always be problemmatic.

Message: OK your 87 is cark now so a older 318 will work,
but your truck is 4x4 so you,ll have problems here, motor mounts you,ll have to build them no one makes the kit for 4x4s
if you can find a 91 318/5.2 dak that would solve the motor mount problem, bolt a carb intake on and your good, and trans from same
cooling fan is a small problem, electric is the easiest
the transfer is a 205 or 207 in a 87 if my memory is right,88-94 have a 231
the ax15 trans may or not hold up,the clutch is hyd.in the daks and the older rams/cars are cable or linkage,
basicly it looks easy on paper
but theres alot of little things that you will have to address before this will come together,
exhaust,clutch paddles,motor mounts,cooling,trans you intend to use,etc etc
by staying with your auto trans will answer alot of them
or go like matt said form the same vehicle
