Subject: Can a air filter be any MORE clogged? IP: Logged
Message:
Sunday I decided to LOOK at my air filters. K&N is said to run thousands of miles in between cleanings. I've got TWO and only 28k on my truck total and have cleaned them before.
Look at them NASTY PIGS! They were LOADED with road grime. Off-Road grime is more like it. I guess that's what you get when you've romped through 2 to 3 foot deep creek crossings and mud pits, (which I no longer do on a regular basis)!
There's the LOWER one which is more prone to soil. Balls of grime were plugged in there.
Holding them up to the SUN light I could NOT see any light through any of the one or half of the other!
I sprayed these with industrial HVAC coil cleaner (not knowing if that would KILL these filters) and let them soak. Washed them off and they look like NEW now. That coil cleaner has been a blessing for cleaning rims and dirty ATV's.
I can see SUN light through these beeeeches now!
The truck seemed more responsive on part throttle, but not sure if I gained anything back on WOT beleive that sh*t.
Oh well. I thinks i need to get a air intake into my hood or something :P

Message: Oh yeah. My ATV (it's also a K&N) gets this dirty all the time.
But, I do take it through mud holes, over rocky mountains, DUNES, you name it!
I don't take it easy on my atv EITHER :p

Message: Poor engine has been swallowing all that dirt, read the fine print on a K&N, NOT FOR OFF ROAD USE, and if you do you are supposed to use the foam pre-filter over them.

Message: Well it's a good thing I've decided to spare my beloved Dakota from the off roading it once endured.
I drove it hard, got some videos to remember the abuse.
Time to baby it a little for a while. Plus the computer sh*t I've been installing in it probably wouldn't like hard bumps and water pits :(
