Subject: do colder plugs affect timing?

hey guys its been a long time since I posted over here. But anyway I could have sworn I read somewhere on this site before that cooler plugs retard the timing. Is this true? If so how much does it retard them? like two stages cooler one rdegree of timing retard?

any way let me know. Its not actually for the truck but my 4 wheeler.

It won't do anything to the timing on your 4wheeler. Simply, in a computer controlled engine you may cause a timing change in some vehicles only if the knock sensor senses some knocking or pinging due to the plug change. I would think though that it would be a retard rather than an advance. The plug heat range usually is changed for other reasons or in conjuction with other modifications

And the knock sensor would be where on a dakota?

A colder plug can reduce some predetonation, whether or not it actually retards timing?
It accomplishes the same thing to a degree, the colder plug does.

Texas Todd, Notice I said "some vehicles". No offense, but reading comprehension seems to be lacking on this board latly.

There is no knock sensor on Magnum engines. YOu can buy one for about $400 I think. A colder plug will help your engine to NOT knock or ping even without the sensor.

And colder, or hotter plugs do not alter the ignition timing. The temperature rating refers to the temperature at which the plug reaches operating temperature. If pinging, a cooler plug will operature in a lower temp range, thus reducing the chance of pre-ignition from a hot plug electrode, and actually give the ignition spark a chance to light the charge off as intended.

thanks guys I don't have any knocking in my truck or 4wheeler. but on a 2 stroke retarding the timing moves the power band too higher rpms. could have given me alittle top end.
