Has anyone heard anything about or has installed the 4.7 HO upgrade (http://buymopar.com/store/magnum.html) from BuyMopar.com? I know the HO cam is worth the time and money overall, but is THIS kit worth the money?

00 Dak, 100% stock....for now....

The HO cams make a pretty good difference in low end and mid ranger power. The HO manifold does help in the higher RPM's. A fastman throttle body or F&B throttle body also helps with these two mods.

Within the next year I plan to be towing a 3500 lb trailer.

So based on what I have read
in this forum, the mods I’m thinking about are:
HO cam & manifold
F&B 68mm throttle body
Volant intake(it looks like Z-tubes are not being made for the 4.7 right now)
Magnaflow exhaust (3” in, dual 2.5” out)
SSB slotted front rotors
And perhaps, SSB rear disk brake conversion.

Should make for a busy couple of weekends installing everything.

If all this doesn’t do the trick, then I’ll keep the Dak for commuting and get a 2500 Turbo Cummings towing. LOL!

That's about the mods I have.

I've towed more and more and my truck STILL pulls great. Just did this run last weekend. I could still do 80 MPH up them mountain grades on the way to the dunes.

I have a magnaflow muffler and love it. A cat back exhaust will not help out performance really. Maybe just a couple HP. I'd recommend just doing a muffler swap unless you just want the duals look.

Hopefully, you're looking at getting all those mods because you want them; not because you think you need them to tow 3500 lbs. Your Dak will tow that fine unmodded. The HO cams will help more than the manifolds. I wouldn't expect the exhaust mods to do much other than alter tone unless you replace the restrictive Y-pipe. As long as you're looking to trick it out, you might want to check out Roadmaster active suspension too.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Thanks for all the input. Any and all advise is welcomed. I live in Colorado Springs, so most of my towing will be in the mountains and over the Divide (a couple passes are at 10500+ ft.). Any torque and HP gains I’m sure will help out.

Again, thanks for the input!

showing off??? LOL :-) Look at the trailer to the right of the picture.
Everyone else had TOY HAULERS and bigger trucks. But I could still go faster than them on the hills.

I'll get myself a toy hauler some day. It will probably be a fixer up-er though at first. it would be nice not to have to sleep in the tent any more either... sigh!

Then we'll see how hard the towing gets with my Dak pulling the load AND having more wind resistance!

Oh. One thing to note, I think I have one dead spot just under 3k RPM's since I did the cams and then ported my TB.
Going with the early HO intake manifold would probably kill even more bottom end but I hear the later ones are the same as my '03 intake which is a comprimise between the old HO and non HO intakes.

Going to 4.10 gears should make me forget about that dead spot. It's not really that bad though.

One last (dumb) question. I've heard a lot about replacing the restrictive Y-pipe. What is it that makes the Y-pipe restrictive? Are there pre-cats in it or just to many bends in the tubing?

Two 2-1/4" pipes squeezed down to about half their diameter where they're joined.
Take a real good look at yours and you'll see.

The 5.2 had 2 1/4" from the exhaust manifolds to the y-pipe, but on a 4.7, they are only 2". Magnaflow makes some large diameter/ high flow y-pipes.

I've looked at mine and it didn't "look" so bad.

I don't have the PRE CATS or I'd have hacked my y-pipe off ages ago and went duals already. I just have the single large CAT on mine.

If it is really so bad, I could easily MAKE a y-pipe at home and weld it up. But again, I'd rather get some new cats and go duals when i hack into my pipe.
