Subject: G-Tech/Air intake results IP: Logged
Message: Just to add another datapoint to the "are air intakes worth it" silo (or add fuel to the fire...). I wanted to see what difference there was between an almost stock air intake setup and the Volant air intake on my truck.
Note that I have an 02 QC AWD 4.7 auto 3.55, (with HO cams, Magnaflow muffler, no clutch fan, and Superchips Perf program).
When I say "almost stock" what I mean is that I have replaced the stock airhat with a 3.5" plastic tube (like the Airaid MIT). All else is stock, with a Wix paper air filter.
The Volant for the 4.7 is a plastic tube with a cone K&N like air filter, which puts the filter up by the PCM. It also has a Mickey-Mouse plastic heat shield that wraps around the engine side of the cone filter.
Originally, I put the Volant on for about a year, then went back to stock as I was tired of the intake noise. I re-installed the Volant a couple of weeks ago just to see if I wanted to put it back on. After running it for that time, the intake noise was starting to annoy me again (not an intake noise fan, exhaust noise, now that's cool!), but I thought that I would make some G-Tech runs with the 2 configurations to see if the results convinced me to keep it on. The results surprised me.
The "almost" stock air intake averaged 16.05 sec 1/4s. The Volant averaged 16.25 sec 1/4s. All the runs were on the same day, within 60 minutes of each other, and on the same section of road (same direction too).
Now, I'm not saying that my results say that all air intakes are BS, just that my results on my truck show that I'll be staying with the stock setup for now.
Gotta love this G-Tech!
