Message:
I'm still trying to get some questions answered on a 3.9 to 5.2 swap in a 1992 Dakota with an auto trans. Not really interested in a 5.9. The 5.2 with light mods will be enough.

I've found out that I need...

5.2 liter from 92-present (Magnum)
Intake/Exhaust Manifold from 92-95 (EGR)
V8 PCM from 92-95 (OBDI one plug ECU)
V8 wiring harness from 92-95 (OBDI)
V8 Flexplate (Crank Position Sensor)
Longer Heater Hoses (longer block)
Fan Shroud from V8 or Electric Fans
V8 Radiator strongly recommended

Other questions...

1) Some people say the A500 currently mated to the 3.9 will be fine with the 5.2. Others say I need to swap it. I need advice on this. I know the 318 mounts to tranny bellhousing, but I need to know if the A500 will be able to handle a little abuse. I'm not going to be taking it to the track every week, but I'm obviously not swapping in a V8 to drive like a granny.

I can't find info on the Dodge transmissions for anything. I know that the hydraulic controlled transmissions ended with an (H). 42RH, 44RH, 46RH. And electronic transmissions ended with (E). This supposedly changed in 1996 with the OBDII, I assume. Which one is the A500, A518, and the last one? Which tranny came with the 5.2 liter in the 92 Dakota?

2) Will all of the sensors off of a 3.9 work with a 5.2?

Thanks for the help in advance. I know V8 swap questions are getting old, but if we get them all answered, we can setup a sticky to make it easier on others. I have plenty of bandwith to setup a page on my site, too.

Well...I found this...

Here is some useful info on the numbering system for Chrysler trannys.
Auto Trans code breaks down like this:
This particular for the 46RH.

4 = 4 forward speeds
6 = strength of trans. (1-9, higher number, stronger trans.)
R = Rear wheel drive
H = Hydraulic controlled, E = Electronic controlled shift

And if you want gear ratios and such--

Automatic, 4-Speed Overdrive Gear Ratios 1994-1997 models

Transmission
42RH 46RH (A518) 47RH (A618)

1st Gear 2.74 2.45 2.45
2nd Gear 1.54 1.45 1.45
3rd Gear 1.00 1.00 1.00
4th Gear 0.69 0.69 0.69
R Gear 2.21 2.21 2.21

Torque Converter
Diameter 273 mm(10.75 in.) 273 mm (10.75 in.) 310 mm (12.2 in.)

Input Torque
Rating (ft-lb)
NA NA 450

GCVW (lb) 7,800 14,000 19,000

All the V6 sensors will work on the 318.
The 1989 Shelby shipped with 318 and the A500. Most of the failures were due to the same issues Dodge never bothered to fix in any version of their OD trannies. Want it to live? Get a TransGo kit in it, and run a healthy tranny auxilliary cooler. The A500 was intended, in production trim, to handle no more than 400ft/lbs torque. It'll handle the 318. If you were drag racing seriously on the track, or doing heavy towing, I'd suggest some of the newer strengthened parts (5-pinion planetaries, etc), or swapping to the larger A518, but for street duty, no problem. Just get the kit, keep the tranny cool, and run a good synthetic tranny fluid....like something from Royal Purple or Redline.

Oh, the A500 was re-designated 40RH, 42RH, and later 42RE, also the 44RH. The A500 is essentially an overdrive-equipped A904 Torqueflite. A904's are built to run 9-second 426 Hemi Super Stockers, so the HD parts are there, but the cost and effort makes the 518 an easy choice when necessary.
A518 is 46RH/RE. This is an overdrive version of the 727 Torqueflite.

Swapped a 5.7/5 speed into my '93. I'm running 295-60-16's out back, and, with no posi will smoke the daylights out of one wheel on any surface. I shredded my driveshaft last month, so she's down while I'm working on a posi 9.25 rear before having a new rear shaft built. Just for info, I scaled my 1st gen at 3740lbs (hemi installed)without me in it, 2nd gens should be heavier, the 5 speed auto has a lower 1st gear (3:1) than the 44/46 series, so you scrounge some extra power there also.

On the 5.2 swap, I had a donor truck when I upgraded to the 5.2, and everything bolted right up 46RH trans, exhaust, mounts, all like stock. The 44RH driveshaft even fit the 46 trans. Good luck with the swap!
