I just installed a Hughes Engines HER1828AL cam in my 99 Dakota R/T. After installing this, I have noticed 2 things. I am wondering if any of you have experienced this with cam installs?
1. Now when the truck warms up to operating temp the idle drops to around 400rpm and seems like it's going to die. Sometimes it has a hard time starting when it's hot and I shut it off. 2. The second thing is it is very sluggish from idle to 2500 rpm. Do you think its the cam or the issue that I am experiencing from the above issue.

Thank you for your help!!!

Takes the truck about 200 miles after you reset the pcm for it to idle correctly, mine always acts like it's going to die after I reset it. The pcm is looking for the stock cam and just doesn't know how to react at first.

When you installed the cam did you advance or retard it any. Might try adding 4 degrees advance to it. Do you still have stock gears and stall?

I did not advance or retard it. How would I go about doing that? Is that something I can do or should I have a performance shop handle it? I do have the stock gears but have the mopar torque converter and the rpm range starts at 2200 on it.

did you change the computer/flash for a different cam?

if you still have the stock computer the computer will have problems trying to adjust for this cam

you may need MPpcm,B&G flash, superchip etc before things will come together for you

The cam should have 3 markers on the base of it. If the middle one is pointing straight up, then it is neither advanced, not retarded. If the one on the far left is straight up, it is advanced. And the opposite for the far right.

after rereading your post again

have you index your dist?

this is to sync your injectors in relationship with your valves opening/closing and the pistons,

if they are out much it will act like slow timing, slow to rev[lazy until it gets its revs up]poor power, gas milage sucks etc

turn motor clockwise from front[if you go by,never turn back]
bring #1 piston up on compression stroke,
set the timing line on the harmonic balancer on the 0 degrees on the timing tab,
remove the dist cap, inside dist theres a plastic cover with a line on it,adjust the dist so the rotor button tip is inline with this line[looking straight down on it]
tighten dist,replace cap,its indexed

if this does,nt help you may be off 1 tooth on the timing gears
