Subject: Gearing Question IP: Logged
Message: I recently put 285/75/16 Mud Terrains on my truck and was wanting to change out my 3.55 gears for 4.10s. I have 03 4x4 and was wondering what size my front/rearend are. I think the rear is 9.25 and the front is a 8, but not sure. Any suggestions on where I can get a good deal on the new gears. And can anybody give me an estimate on how much the installation will cost for both front and rear? Do I need to get an installation kit even though Im having a mechanic/dealership do it? Thanks

Message: Ok guys here is what I found. I can get both gears for about $500 and the install for $550, do those prices seem reasonable? Do I need to get an installation kit? The truck has 36,000 miles on it. Thanks

Message: I was quoted $800 for labor once, so i guess that's cool.
I plan on doing mine myself when I get the parts. I've got the same truck.
Try to find a knowledgable mechanic you can have do on the side if he dares. He'd surely do for a few hundred $$$ but don't expect a warranty like a shop can carry.

Message: I wish I could do mine myself. No tools, no garage, no skills, haha. I only have basic automotive skills. I should really take some auto classes while Im still in college, it would save me a ton of money.

Message: Cost me $600 for install + $515 parts total for both front and rear. Your prices are right in line. I shopped around, and this is the cheapest that I found for a reputable shop. The diff sizes you listed were the same as my '02, but I'm not sure if Dodge changed them for '03. I bought my 4.11 gears from Randy's Ring & Pinion. I gotta know, did you fit those tires without a lift?

Message: Im also getting my gears from Randy Ring and Pinion. Did you get the Yukon gears? How do you like them? To get the 285's to fit I had to crank the torsion bars a few times and do a little trimming. It turned out great and I dont have any rubbing at all, even when I offroad. No body lift, stock rims.

Message: Idakota, is your truck an auto or a stick? I did the swap from 3.55 to 4.10 on my 03 auto 4x4. I think the 4.10's are perfect for running the factory 265/70r16's. For your 33's i would look into some 4.56's if you are an auto. With the 4.56 and an auto you will be turning just under 2200 rpm's at 70.

Message: Android287, my truck is a stick. That is why I opted for the 4.10, and I also do a lot of intersate driving and want to maintain decent gas mileage.

Message: do not go with 4.56 gears.. your RPMs will be way too high.
I have 4.10 and I'm 33x12.5x15 BFG A/T and my rpms at 70 mph are 2200. They are just a tad high on the freeway but great for towing and city which is mostly what I do so it works for me.
just my 2 cents. I think I paid $1200 pluse $200 for a 2 year full warranty parts and labor from 4wheel parts.
