Subject: dead cylinder

I have a 99 durango 5.9. It has a dead miss on #6.
I have changed the plugs, wires, dist. cap, and rotary button, as well as injectors. The miss stays on the #6 cylinder and it has 125 psi of compression. Where should I go to next.
All help is appreciated.

If you are just going off the PCM codes to tell you where the miss is, they could be leading you in the wrong direction. When I put my roller rockers back on with new lifters, I was popping #2 injector misfire codes, but i was a loose rocker on the drivers side causing the problems, not even related to the injector it was calling out. Also, make sure you have the plug wires on in the proper postion. Very easy and common mistake to get a couple mixed up.

125 PSI? Thats a lot for a naturally aspiriated stock engine. Or do you have a super charger or turbo charger, or some other boost producing component? If not it sounds like ur having some predetonation in the combustion chamber. (engine Knock). a cheap little method to try, put some high grade fuel in on ur next fill up. If it goes away u have a predetonation issue, caused by too much of fuel/air going into ur engine. Causing much pressure inside the cylinder. If thats the case u have a very expensive repair job on ur hands. That would be an issue with the camshaft, springers rockers and/or lifters. im talking 700$+ for that to be repaired. Let me know if this helps

does it feel like its missing? is the motor laboring? how many miles on the motor? with regard to the 125 compression reading, an oiley cylinder (blown rings/bad valve guides/seals) will show a higher than normal reading due to the excessive oil acting as a good seal.

125psi on that cylinder is a little low. should be in the neighborhood of about 150. But thats still enough to fire that cylinder correctly. Next step, see if the miss will move, ie take that injector out and put it in like 4 or somthing, take the plug wire and change it to another cylinder. Just see if the miss will move to another cylinder. Also when you put the injectors in did you clean the fuel rail? if all that checks out, maybe perform a cylinder leak down test, see if its blow by, or somthing of that sort, but with your compression readings i doubt its anything of that sort. let me know what happens when you move the injector around.

considering MOST engines IVE WORKED ON run on 95-110 PSI on compression stroke id say what i was saying was well grounded. Ive never had a chrysler engine come in for misfire for me to work on, so i cant say i know everything and im not for the first point. But i can say ford has kept me a job! :-) So what if im wrong? at least im not bashing someone whos trying to help. So whos the real moron here?


Anyways, science guy makes a point. Also what about getting ur cam/crank sensors checked? a simple osciloscope test will tell u if its getting the right signal or not. If it reads a signal on all cylinders but 1(it wont tell u which one but im sure u already know anyways) that maybe ur problem. Ill double check with some of the shops books and see what it says or if there's any TSB's. If ur going to mess around with plug wires and injectors be sure they are timed properly. having a spark plug fire on a intake stoke is not a good thing. By that i mean move the entire wire from the ignition coil. Like switch the 4th and 6th entirely. but im sure u already know that. oh and dont do it while its running 30KV+ actually hurts! LOL

Also had dead cylinder misfire once on said engine, '95 318, It wound up being that the intake manifold gasket had cracked and seperated directly above #1 port runner. pulled a low vacume test at idle, and the extra air was leaning out the cyl badly enough to missfire

Ok ill admit it i was wrong 125 PSI is alittle low.... . I hate it when im wrong :-p Oh well... Something else i thought of.... You might have a lean misfire. Back probe a voltmeter on ur O2 sensor and Turn it on. Its reading should be between .2 and .8 volts. This test takes about 2 mins to do. Just Another step to properly diagnose whats causing it. Let me know the results of this. It wouldnt be the injector since u replaced but in this case it might be the fuel line OR the computer. Always take the extra minute to examine, or you will waste money on unnescarry parts
