I know I should have spent the $21,000 for the 2000 R/T 5.9 v8 instead, but I didn't and now I want to know what if any upgrades are available to my 2.5L 4cyl 1998 dakota sport regular cab 2 wheel drive truck.

I believe the 2.5L is the same one they use in the Jeeps. I know Mopar has some performance parts for these engines, I just don't know exactly what they offer. You might find some ideas on some Jeep websites. Just a thought

Should also check out Clifford Performance parts.
they have cams, intakes and headers for your engine. Anything with the AMC/Jeep newer 4cyl(150ci). They don't specify the dakota but these parts should work without any problems. Although I would check to make sure on the header.

I had looked under the hood of a fellow DML'ers 4-popper Dakota and noticed that the TB looks almost identical to the one on my wifes Jeep GC 4.0L. Hmmmmm.....worth looking into Turbo City for that one.

Mopar does have cams for that engine. From the mopar book they started putting the Jeep 2.5L in the Daks in 1996. I agree with Bernd that a turbo would be the way to go for maximum fun. Although I would wonder about how the tranny would handle it.

It is interesting to note that they don't mention any horsepower numbers at all. Seems to me if they had dyno'd the blower they'd have performance data. Why NOT post it if they had it? Smells a bit fishy to me, but could be legit. The photos do look nice.....

Still stuck with 4 cyls - I did however test drive a 2001 R/T when the 2002s came out. I am still searching and everyone's ideas are a big help. I am still thinking about just starting over with an R/T but hey... I gotta eat.

Thanks for the help.

I have a jeep with a 2.5L i just happend to stumble onto this site. As far as the cam's for the motor.... i got a .450 lift one sitting here but not sure of what all mods to do b4 i put it in ie.. springs valves shaving heads ect... however i am running a 6cyl jeep XJ intake the only catch to this is you need to switch over the vacum motor part it has a peg that catches on the intake manifold. I am also running K&N filter, accell coil, MSD 6al ignition, Pace setter exhaust, high flow cat, MSD red 8mm wires, high flow radiator, and i dropped my running temp from 195 to 180,and i switched to a derale oil cooler with seperate radiator to help keep it cool and so i can hold more around 6qts of oil, also went wtih a flex-a-lite electric fan, also running bosche 4 plugs to get the most outta the msd... It is pretty fast runs really good so far i keep up with the 4L jeeps with ease even running my 33x12.5 tires though i do have 4.10 gears and a 5spd ... This winter i am doing the cam lifters pistons ect full engine build see if i can't push it past 200-225 without a supercharger or a turbo. who knows.... Anyone hears anything about superchargers or turbo's lemme know or any questions. hope some of this helps you out.

BEST MODs. for 2.5 4 banger:

Go to local wal-mart, buy "For Sale" sign, and install in all windows possible. Find payoff balance, subtract 2000 dollars then write that price on "For Sale" signs.

I had 2.5 for 3 months because it was given to me, I don't see why dodge even thought about putting that engine in our trucks.

My .02 cents
Paul

I hope I haven't offended anyone here, thats just my opinion, take it the way you want.

I have a 1985 cj with a 2.5 in it, I need a little advice if any one knows. My question is will a new 2.5 out of a wrangler bolt in my jeep? Are the blocks the same on the 1985 model and the 2000 model? My 4 cyl. is getting real tired and I would like the simply way out and for idling around the hills it is fine. Thanks TB

i've got the 2.5 in my wrangler, with camshaft, header, mild porting, 2.5 exhaust, intake mods. if you want performance outta this 4-cyl, you're gonna have to go supercharging, mine's lively but cannot hope to keep up with the cheapest econoboxes. breathes well all the way up to 5000, prob 175 ft-lbs and 165 hp.

Sounds about where mine is right now. But I also have MSD 6AL, but no porting. With boost I think this engine could do rather well. It's just how much you actually want to throw into it time wise and money wise.

Okay, stop for a second and think about this. You could sell your 4 banger and get the big ole V8, and drop $26k or so. Or you could drop $5k give or take a few thousand and get your 4 banger to perform like a 4.7 V8. To be quite honest you should just sell the ole' slow poke and get what you really want, a nice, fast, R/T. You could also spend $16k like me and get a nice 4.7 V8 SLT and dump a grand or two into and get it damn close to a R/T. Its your money. I just don't see the logic in dumping all that money into a 4 Banger just to make it perform like a stock V8.
