Subject: Transmission Leaking on Garage Floor. IP: Logged
Message: I've noticed that my transmission is leaking in my 1995 Dakota with the automatic transmission has 115,000 miles and I was wondering if anyone has ever tried those transmission additives which are supposed to help seal up leaks? I saw it at pepboys the other day and figured I'd give it a shot unless someone knows something I don't know about them destroying the transmission or anything like that. Any help would really be appreciated.

Message: Check the seals at the back of the transmission and the input shaft to the transfer case. I work a Chrysler dealer and they are notorious for leaking.

Message: Most engine and tranny additives are pure snake oil, I would never use them. However, I had a front pump leak on a 4x4 which was going to require the removal of the tranny and transfer case to fix the pump seals, not something that I was looking forward to.
I dropped $10 on some tranny stop leak and what do you know it stopped the leak. I can't remember the name of it, but it was in a silver can with blue writing, popular brand that has been around for a long time. I talked to other people who have used this same brand and it also stopped leaks and resolved shifting problems for them.
If the leak is from a seal which is easy to replace, just replace the seal. If it's going to require pulling the tranny, why not try the stop leak first?

Message: Just did my tranny seal last weekend. It wasn't that hard and took maybe about 2 hrs. to do. Drop the drivelines and transfer case then pop the old seal out, tap the new one in, and put it back together.
