Subject: Fipk advice for 04-4.7L IP: Logged
Message: I'm thinking of installing a K&N Gen 2 intake system on my 04 4.7L CC Dak. I have heard mixed reviews. What gains (if any) should I expect for$250.00?
Any advice appreciated
Thanks,
Matt Buckner

Message: try macperformance.com thats where i got my intake for $199 its stainless steel and it looks really good.. i dont like k&n becouse they are plastic.. they dont look good and you could make something at home that would perform just like a k&n intake.. and watch for 04 intakes they moved the iat sensor out of the manifold into the intake tube! i had to drill a 5/8" hole into my intake and get a grommet to hold it in place

Message: and also you can really tell the differance when you install an intake performs well a little noisy but kinda cool.. the plastic intakes are expose to be more cold air frindly but if you want it to look really good buy stainless.. if not make it youself and it would prob. still look alright

Message: Matt.
Save your money, keep your stock intake, and just get the drop-in K&N filter.
Much cheaper and same gains.

Message: Or you could get that stainless thingy, which sould absorb more heat, heating the air slightly on the intake.
But of course, like walt says, you could drive around town with your hood off, so people could see your cheesy stainless intake, with the slightly reduced performance of pre heated air.
Or make a homebrew, for next to nothing.

Message: dang thats just cruel tex thats alright i think im gonna take my hood off to compansate for my lack of cold air so i can show of my intake that should give me atleast 5hp and some serious downforce! truck series here i come!! but seriously i doubt there really is much difference from a k&n to my stainless intake and mine was $50 dollars cheaper and very functional.. have fun with whatever you get!

Message: K&N took a while to develop the FIPK because it took them a while to come up with a design that showed an honest horsepower gain. Any of the homebrew guys dyno test their results to see how they really did ? I think only one other cold air intake manufacturer dynoed a gain, and that was in conjunction with a less restrictive exhaust. Should definitely see gains over just the K&N drop in filter.

Message: Walt, sorry for the sarcasm, and yes, your stainless one may flow just as well. My homebrew may also, but I did not dyno the before and after, so I really can't say.
Sorry 'bout trounching on your post
K&N finally posted some dyno's, it would be nice to see someone more independent get the same results, with their own before and after dyno.
I took my K&N drop in out of my home brew on one dyno, actually, so I didn't suck up any dirt in the bottom of my stock filter box, I rotated the the top as well. (dynoed with the hood up)
It got about a 1hp and 1 ftlb max gain at the wheels. It was when I was dynoing the new SC tuner for the 4.7-that's been posted.

Message: K&N does have the horsepower gains to prove that thier stuff works, but I just cant see spending that much on a plastic intake.
