Subject: Gas Millage etc question IP: Logged
Message: I'm looking to purchase a 97-03 Dakota Club Cab 4x4 within the near future. I'm most interested in knowing what gas millage is typical for the 3.9 V6, 4.7 and 5.2 V8's. Also, if you have any additional information that would be useful before buying, I'm most interested.
Thanks!

Message: My 2000 Quad Cab with the 3.9L V6 gets about 16 mpg city. I reccomend getting the V8 to add the extra horsepower. I believe the new 4.7L is just about as fuel effiecient as the older 3.9's. Not sure.

Message: I think in 2003 the 3.7 came out. I have a friend that has a 2003 (I think) with the 3.7, club cab, and 4x4. He says he gets in the 19+ on the highway and has 210 hp. Same design as the 4.7. Just somemore info to digest. All are good engines. Need to decide if you want a V6 or V8. Have been driving a Durango with a 5.9 instead of my Dakota, and the gas is starting to get to me. I LOVE the power, but with gas at about $1.90 a gallon and on a student salary (NOTHING) MPG's are everything. I would pick the V8 over all, can't beat the power.

Message: also you need to look at the thread heater core puked. the dakotas has a prob with the heater core leaking. here is the link.
https://www.dodgedakota.net/boards/dea/338.html
it looks like 98 to 2001 models. some people has replaced as many as 5 in their trucks so far. I havent heard anything on durangos doing the same thing. so maybe its a design flaw in the DAKS. so if you dont want a high bill for having the core replaced I would stay away from the 98 to 2001 models. and get a 03 and hope it doesnt have the same prob. to let you know how hard it is to replace. you have to remove the whole dash board. I dont want to scare you away from the dak but its better to learn about the prob now than after you buy the truck and have the mist comming out the vents and go WTF lol

Message: My 92 Dak with 3.9L V-6, 4-speed auto 4WD club cab with cap, and 3.55 axle, gets 16 mpg city and 20 highway, stock parts.
I recently rented a 2004 Dak QC with 4.7L V-8 and 5-speed auto, 4WD. It felt like it had a lot less power than my V-6 (probably heavier), and it got 17-18 mpg highway, driving the same conditions as I get 20 with my truck.
