Subject: Chevy Colorado - your thoughts IP: Logged
Message: wanted to get a general concensus on the chevy colorado's.
I am looking into purchasing a newer truck, and not a big fan of the new dakotas. I have a genIII dakota now, and was looking towards the new colorado's.
I would get a 2wd verision, maybe the extreme, but just wanted to see what type of performance/speed i could get out of it.
I would be getting 3.5L I5 with the 5 speed and supercharing it. Any one heard of this? or know of someone who has done the same?
Just getting tired of the dak breakin down and want a new truck

Message: they don't look too bad to me. i wouldn't get an extreme though. prolly just a bunch of stickers and funky looking ground effects and no real performance enhancements. don't know about performance. maybe check on a chevy board and see what they say.

Message: i'm in the same boat.. i was actually going to get a colorado before i go tmy dakota last year but the colorado didn't hit the dealer til late jan and i got my dakota in nov.. i just couldn't wait to get otu of my S10.. but i like the look of the colorado and from what i have seen there are not to manu performance part out there yet but the 3.5 with intake and exhaust puts out a very good HP increase.. i haven't seen the supercharger but i have heard of a couple companys making turbo kits.. if i didn;t have so much negative equity in my dakota 03 with 29,899 mile blue book of 12,000.. i paid $24,000 for it nov of 2003 as a left over.. but the colorado ext or club cab will be my next truck..

Message: I like the looks of the Colorado but decided it was too small. I wanted a truck that could really seat five and carry stuff in the bed.
If I wanted a "extreme" or sport truck I would look at the new Tacoma!

Message: I drove both the Dak and the Colorado before buying. I couldn't find many compliments for the Colorado. I wanted an extended cab and theirs was awful small behind the front seats. The Dak is a lot more reasonable sized. The Colorado (Z85 LS 4x4 I5) had hellacious body lean in curves where the Dak (SLT 4x4) felt much more level. In my eyes the new Dak is one of the best looking small trucks ever, I couldn't say the same for the Colorado (too much grey plastic and the height/width ratio was too high.) The 4-banger-like exhaust note didn't impress me, I'd hoped it would sound more like a six.

Message: Well coming to a dodge board is the worst place to get an honest opinion. These guys love there trucks and bash others which is normal. I am a Chevy guy and do the same on the s-10 forums. You should go to www.coloradofans.com. there you can see what people, who own one have to say.

Message: you know they might be coming out with a colorado ss with the corvette engine in it. if it ever makes it beyond concept. i'd buy one of those but not one of the other colorodo's. just too small for me and no way a 5 cyl can compare to a v8 option.

Message: If you're to get a colorado, dont get an extreme. The price is marked up about 4000 just to get headlamps, ground effects, and badges. Get a sport with the I-5. Either way you put it it is still a 5 cylinder.

Message: I just got out of my s10 for a 04 4x4 dak slt plus and I couldn't be happier. I admit I keep my s10 for a farm truck, but the dak is a completely different animal. I have towed neighbors out of ditches, gone where my s10 could never go, and with the dodge incentives, you can't really go wrong.
the 4.7L is a tried and true mopar motor. Honestly, how can the GM compete? As far as reliability, my s10 was a good truck, but the dakota is a lot more stable and capable then the chevy ever was. I race motocross, and in the past stessed about my s10 making it up dirt roads and hills with a 200 lb bike and some gear in the back. I really felt the weight. No longer a concern. There's really no decision to make.

Message: I had considered the Colorado myself when it came time to retire the 93 Dak. But a good friend who is a Chevy guy talked me out of it because of the problems he and his dad had with their newer Chevy's. I have only talked to one guy with a Colorado and it has the 5 cyl. and he said he ain't at all impressed with performance. But then again that wasn't his main goal so he can live with it. I bought a nice low mile 02 Dak with the 4.7. Very happy with it. Hopefully it will be as reliable as the 93 I bought new and owned 12 yrs.

Message: Just my .02 but i would tend to stay away from the new I-5 for a few years and let chebby get the bugs worked out. As with any totally new engine platform there is always going to be problems for the first few years, even with dodges.

Message: sorry I am for one not a die hard dodge mopar fan. I owned ford for along time. my cousin back when he had a tacoma wanted to trade it in for a colorado.he thought he would really like it untill he looked at it upclose. the interior was plain and cheap looking. exterior was about the same. very boxy and come on a 5 cylinder motor? needless to say he didnt get it. the dakota has more flash and very nice interior. also nothing beats a V-8. even the V-6 is nice too. I dont see many colorados on the road and its been out for almost a year? I think they could sell more if they put a V-8 in there. My cousin is getting a titan soon. so if you want I can tell you how it does when he gets it. I would say test drive colorado and you should feel its short commings after test driving a dakota or even a tacoma I know the TRD package is awsome on a dirt road. handles better than my 4x4 dak. and the tacoma was a 2wd. lol. so I am not bias in saying get a dak because I own a dak. after all I have more prob with my 03 dak in the first year than with my 95 ranger that I owned for 9 years and I had no problems with that truck. but I love the preformance and the look of the truck. I would love to get a titan if I had the greenbacks.
in the end get what you think you are happy with.

Message: after reading the colorado fan site. with their inline 5 they are getting about the same gas mailage as we are with our 4.7 V-8's. about 22mpg. I thought chevy said the inline 5 was suppose to get the MPG od a 4 banger with the power of a V-6. doesnt look like 4 banger MPG to me. chevy has always liked to do those odd cylinder motors. like in the geo it had a 3 cylinder motor. might be one reason they are having problems moving the colorados
