Subject: Tuneup Checklist 3.9L IP: Logged
Message: Good morning to all...
If I do anything before the Summer is out, I want to do a tuneup on my Dakota 3.9L. From reading previous posts, here's what I think I need:
Autolite 3923s
Brass Contact Cap/Rotor
Good set of Spark plug wires
In regards to the list, what brands do the members of the list recommend for the Brass Contact Cap/Rotor and where can I purchase these?
I've heard mention that the MSD 8.5 wires are the best we can use on our Magnum engines. What is everyone's thoughts on the Mopar 7.5 sets or any other recommended set?
Any other comments and recommendations would be appreciated with my sincere thanks for all of your helpful comments.

Message: I would go with the MSD 8.5mm wires. Plus if you haven't done this yet; your air cleaner has a tube that goes to the front of the truck. There is a littl plastic peice at the end that the air has to move around to get into the tube. You should be able to pull it off pretty easily. This helps a little bit.

Message: I used MSD 8.5 mm wires. It cost me about $60-$65 from www.truckperformance.com. I'm not sure about the MOPAR performance 7.5mm. The MOPAR wires will probably fit the stock wire looms. The MSD needed bigger looms. I bought Mr. Gasket brand from Pepboys. Cap/rotor: Borg Warner (I used NAPA). I changed the stock coil (not necessary) to Accel Super coil with adapter harness. Air filter: (unless you are going to a cold air intake system) K&N filtercharger drop in. Oil: I used Mobil 1 (I heard Castrol syntec is good) and a good filter. Check http://www.speedtweaks.net for tips and tricks.
'01 QC sport, 3.9L v6, 5spd, 2wd, gibson, volant intake, msd wires, accel super coil

Message: Harvey,
I notice you havbe the Volant Intake..Was that the 5.2 system? What was the cost of that system and how was the install? Does this system account for the cruise control cable problem I've heard so much about?
David
P.S. Forgive my ignorance, but what exactly is a "loom"? :-)

Message: Wire looms are the plastic wire holders. This keeps the wires neat and away from hot metals (exhaust). I couldn't squeeze the 8.5 mm into the stock holders so I needed larger holders. Yes, the volant cold air intake system was for 5.2/5.9L engines. I know I had a problem with the cruise control unit on '01. If you go to http://www.volantperformance.com you can find a picture of the installation on a dak. The brackets holding the system did not exactly line up so I put a little muscle to bend them a little to make them fit. Not bad. I bought it from http://www.truckperformance.com. I think I paid about $235. Check where your cruise control unit is located. I think this problem surfaced with the '00/'01.

Message: I own the 2000 Dakota and have heard from others here that the cruise control cable is a problem for most systems...
I also recall reading that K&N was in the process of putting together a FIPK for the 2000 3.9L that resolves this installation issue...Does anyone know of the status of this FIPK from K&N?

Message: David,
When I spoke to K&N a while back, they said they were working on a GenII for 00/01 daks. I asked which engines is this package for and their reply was when we get closer to design they will identify the engines. It sounded like it would be for the 4.7L based on some posts and product availability (end of summer). The Volant solved the cruise control problem.

Message: I like the clean look of the Volant system and may go for it when I can scrape up the money. I'm also hoping to put some money away for a TB, which I think is even of greater importance in getting the air into the engine. I do think that from what I have read here and my own albeit short experience with the engine so far, this 3.9L does have potential of being a better engine.
Now if only I could address the auto tranny problem. From what I feel when driving the truck, it shifts way too soon and seemingly always at the time when I need the low gear power the most.
Oh, my kingdom for more time and money. As a family man with a wife and stepson, there never seems to be enough time or money to really have the fun you want to have. Boo hoo :-)
