Message: There are many symptoms of a failing or inefficient catalytic converter. Reduced/restricted exhaust output, reduction in engine power, "Check Engine" lamp illuminated, rattle noise from exhaust, etc. The best test (I think) is a 5 gas analyzer that can give you specific efficiency information. Ask around at some local exhaust repair facilities.

Message: My first indication that my cat was going bad was the rattling
sound from my exhaust. I crawled under my truck and tighted
every heat shield I could find, but that didn't fix it. I tracked the
noise down to the cat. It makes the noise especially bad when I
would rev up to 3000 RPM or so and then cut the throttle off.
The second indication that my cat was bad (not going bad) was
failing my California SMOG check. DOH!

Message: Don't forget that catcons are under federal warranty for 8 years/80K miles by law; if you're in this period, you get a new one free from the dealer if bad.
