Subject: homemade cold air intake

I am planning on making my own cold air intake out of some abs pipe, if not pvc. and i was wondering what angle elbows i would need and how long the straight pipes i need to get. Also what diamiters i would need. my truck is a 98 4x4 cc with a 5.2L. thanks

I made my own air intake, came out pretty good. I believe I used 3" PVC with a rubber fernco adapter on the end to hook it to the airhat. Go get a conical K&N filter and do some measurements to figure out what size you need. I used two 45* elbows, took it so that it went straight towards the front of the truck beside the radiator and then removed the black plastic flap in front. Made a ghetto heat shield out of some tin too, worked out pretty good.

same as above except i used a 22 degree elbow and have mine resting right where the hole to get to the headlight is. before i had it glued i got the filter scratched up on the wall of the headlight hole, so i glued the pipes good and tight so it wouldn't slip and cause any more damage to the filter. i also had to shave the end of the pipe down to get the filter to fit over it correctly. other than that it was fun. if you paint the pipe use high temperature paint and let it dry completely (overnight should do), then install everything and drive around for about 45 min. to cure the paint. works great once it's done.

can you guys send me a picture of your homebrew air intakes, and any other peoples ideas on how they made theirs.

i went today to try to find some abs pipe to make it out of and all i found was pvc.

i got to thinking, if i paint it with engine paint would that help resist some of the heat from melting it if it tried.

i don't have a picture of mine but i can send you two pictures i used to go by and give me an idea of what to do. and don't sweat having to use PVC if it comes down to it cause it will work just as well as the ABS. as far as the paint is concerned, the pipe won't melt from just the heat in the engine bay. the paint just helps to insulate the pipe so that the air going through it will be cooler as it goes into the engine. i would think you could use engine paint just as well as heat resistant, but i used the heat resistant cause i already had a whole can i never used. mine ended up great when all was dried, glued, and installed. anyway, i'll send you those two pictures and some more if i can find them.

Here's a pic of mine, pretty self explanatory. Might want to fabricate some kind of support bracket though, not seen in my picture.

ok thanks, did you use abs pipe or pvc pipe. and did you notice a good bit in power and fuel milage increase where the filter is located.

It is pvc, and it actually has melted a little bit right by the air hat. That's only because one of my friends drove the truck and forgot to turn on the electric fan, engine got to 235*!!! Otherwise it has worked just fine. I might have felt a bit of power gain, hardly noticeable if so. One of those things where you probably need an upgraded TB and atleast a free flowing cat and muffler to see a lot of gains. I don't watch my gas mileage anymore, too crappy to even care.

I built one out of ABS for my 4.7 and it hasn't warped or gotten tweeked from the heat, even driving our in the desert where I have run the temp up to 220 pulling my boat. I think ABS makes a better material for these tubes since it's cellular and about 1/4" think. I don't think the heat penetrates the ABS as bad as PVC.

However, ABS or PVC will start to deform at some point. I used a 1200 degree heat gun to bend some ABS into an odd shape, a couple of minutes with the heat gun and the ABS bent like a peice of taffy.

About 1.5 years in HOT AZ and no problems yet.

I heard horror stories about a year ago about using PVC but just use ABS, it looks better anyway.

I'd like to get my filter a little more in FRONT of the radiator, but haven't had a chance to yet.

So i will have to wait till then to put it on my truck.

Any REAL plumbing store should have ABS.

Don't forget to get them 3 inch FERNCO brand "no hub" rubber couplers. That will attach the pipe to your TB.

nope all that would do is allow the plastic to melt and then it would glob up inside the thin shell of paint left behind.
Heat resistant paint means that the paint will not burn or peel up to a certain temp, but it does not in any way protect what it is applied to.

Not exactly. The paint itself won't help it resist heat, but if you want to paint it, high temp paint is the way to go. Color, on the other hand, will help. Light colors, such as white, reflect radiant heat. That's one of the reasons white pipe tends to absorb less heat than black pipe. Neither abs nor pvc will stand up to direct contact with a heat source.

PVC vs. ABS -

ABS Quick Facts:
Maximum Temperature: 176°F 80°C
Minimum Temperature: -4°F -20°C
Melting Point: 221°F 105°C
Tensile Strength: 4,300 psi
Hardness: R110
UV Resistance: Poor
Rigid
Specific Gravity: 1.04

PVC Quick Facts:
Maximum Temperature: 158°F 70°C
Minimum Temperature: -13°F -25°C
Autoclavable: No
Melting Point: 176°F 80°C
Tensile Strength: 6,500 psi
Hardness: R105
UV Resistance: Good
Rigid
Specific Gravity: 1.34

ho ho ho, stay away from giving advice on guns and motor vehicles.

None of the pics posted are a 'true' CAI.

On my 4.7, I built a wall around the air intake, that shuts out virtually all the engine compartment air.

I used a thick, corrugated plastic sign, cut it up with heavy scissors, and even put a foam pipe insulation sleeve on top of it where it hits the hood, when closed. It's water/heat proof, been there for years.

Theoretically, it should help, knda hard to dyno somehting like that however.
