Message: A guy at a dealer the other day told me you can get the Hemi in the Durango. If it'll fit in that; it should fit in a Dakota. If you talk to a dealer, you can probably special order a Hemi in a Dakota right now.

Message: No, won't fit. Certainly not in the 05. DC says it won't be available because it is too wide to fit in the frame.
You could possibly fit one in the earlier models, if you're willing to do some fab work.

Message: The Hemi fits in all Dakotas. The 05 Dakota is a mere .7 inches narrower than the Durango. Any clearance problems would be minimal for a novice and not even noteworthy for someone experienced in engine swapping. Quite repeating all the nonsense you hear from people that haven't done it or worse yet, what you hear from your local dealer.

| RE: hemi in dakota IP: Logged
Message: DC blames the HEMI not fitting in the new dakota not because of the vehicles overall width, but because of the new suspension. The 05 has a revised coilover suspension that the new durango does not have and said that it compromises any clearances. Now take into consideration that the dakota already has a smaller chassis than the durango (genIV dak vs genII durango), so it wouldnt be a suprise that it wouldnt fit.
Now someone on another forum once said that the 5.7 is the same width as the 4.7... maybe the block... but not the heads. The heads on the 5.7 are much larger than that of the 4.7 and then you add manifolds on it... no clearance if you have a tall coilover suspension

Message: Haven't they been claiming it won't fit even before the '05s ? Makes you wonder if its just a line of bull; knowing that a big block can be made to fit.

Message: Installing a remote filter is a minor problem. Even the powersteering pump could easily be moved.
Someone will have one in an '05 just to prove DC wrong.

On average, I would say most people would rather have the hemi than a blown 392. On the other hand, many of those same people would fantasize about the 392.

Message: Um, guys ? A 392 IS a hemi; its the old style (before 426) hemi.
Little history lesson for ya. Largest version of the old hemi if I remember right.
Looks like you've go a nice project going there, Wilddodge !

Message: It could be an old hemi, but there are a number of other sizes as well. There are any number of ways of coming up 392 ci. Whether it is or not doesn't matter, most people would still prefer the late hemi over the 392 hemi.

Message: Yes, this is a 1958 392 Hemi. It is actually a 406 now.. I almost went with a 426 crate engine but I like the clean, simple looks of the early Hemi's and with the renewed interest in the early engines you can get anything you want to build a powerhouse. My 392 on the dyno made 655 HP on pump gas.

Message: Your 392 hemi did not make 655hp on pump gas. It didn't make 555hp either. I have a 434 SB2.2 head, EFI small block chevy that makes 620 on pump gas and there is not a 392 Hemi on the planet that can make as much power as a Winston Cup headed engine. The 392 looks cool but they were and still are not very good at making power. I may not know alot about Dakotas but I sure as sh it know about Race engines. Anyone want to argue??? :}
