Subject: Marty from KRC IP: Logged
Message: I've been hard at work trying to decide on which cam to get for my 97 5.2L. I was looking at the 408x cam for it. I have 1.7rr's (will swap back to 1.6rr's if piston-valve clearance is an issue, or too much lift period), an M-1, 50mm TB, & stock heads. I will upgrade to beehive and flash the PCM if necessary, as well as an MSD for spark.
-I know that I cannot expect as big of a gain from my 318 vs the 408, but will it work in my truck?
-What should I be concerned with in this cam?
-I am willing to be a test bed for the 318 w/ the 408x cam.
-Once the bottom end goes on my truck, it's getting a 408 from you guys.
Thanks,
Slow 97

Message: Most people have been happiest with the 210 or 210X cam in a 318. The 408X may be too much for a 318.

Message: The 408X is a real big cam for a 318. The 210X is a good choice. You need a Mopar pcm or even better, a custom flash - which we do.
Auto or stick? What are you running for gears?

Message: I have 3.73's in it now, but I want to go to 4.10's (31" tires). I was expecting the 408x to be a big cam for the 318, I looked at the 210 and 210x, but was wanting the 408x. One, just to see if it can work in a 318, and two, I'm going to go to a 408 bottom end with heads in the next 12-18 months anyway. The cam won't be in for too long since I won't be able to get to it till then.
Gotta love Philly winter's! Not so much the snow, but the chill. I won't say cold for all those true northerners out there.
I know that my stock heads won't be able to flow to maximize the cam, and my biggest concern is the piston to valve clearance and valvetrain harmonics. A cusom flash isn't that big of a deal, and I can leave the truck with you guys for a while for tuning, if necessary.
Appreicate the help so far, and look forward to more!
