Subject: Best overall exhaust for a 5.2??? IP: Logged
Message: I'm planning on totally redoing my exhaust over winter break after finals are over (oh, so soon!). Here's my current setup and what I'm thinking about doing. Anyone with any advice or a similar setup feel free to speak up.
'97 4x4 5.2L, soon to have a homemade functional "ram air" intake from a 1979 trans aim hoodscoop and ported TB for intake. I've just picked up a pair of pacesetter shorty headers, and I'll probably get a dynomax single in/out along with a new high flow cat to go just in front of it. While I'm down there I'm thinking about getting a custom y-pipe made as well, the stock one is pretty dinky. Here's kind of where my questions is. How big is too big for a 5.2 with decent intake mods? Should I go with a 2 1/2" y-pipe and 3" back from there? Or should I stick with 2" y-pipe and 2 1/2 back the rest of the way? Either way I'm planning on running a single in/out muffler and just dumping it right after the rear axle, don't want to have to mess with tips, they only end up getting broken off anyway! Any advice or suggestions would be helpful. Thanks.

Message: If you're running a single cat-back, 3" is good, any more is too large and will cost you power. With a true duel exhaust (which sounds like you're not doing hince the Y pipe), 2 to 2-1/2" is good.

Message: I'm definitely just going with the single cat and muffler, single in single out from the muffler as well. I'm thinking about doing 2 1/2" for the y pipe and then going to 3" the rest of the way back from there. I'm just hoping this isn't too big for a 318, I don't want to lose any low end juice.

Message: It should be fine. The 92-93 trucks came stock with a 3" exhaust.
