Subject: O2 sensors going bad?
IP: Logged

Message:
My gas mileage is much worse that it should be, I'm lucky to be getting 13 or 14 on the interstate. I think it might be the O2 sensors, I bought the truck a few months ago and have no idea how old they are, probably the original ones on the truck with 115,000 miles. My question, do 02 sensors get worse over time or do they just all the sudden up and go out totally? I'm debating getting new ones, but for $110 for the pair I'm a little hesitant. Any help would be appreciated.

Yes.

Either can happen. Usually a code 51 will occur, or code 21, but not always. But before you shotgun your repairs, do a full tuneup and check all vacuum hoses, wiring connections, and general condition of the fuel and electrical systems. Clean battery terminals. Start fresh before you replace parts and find that it did no good.

I've gone over everything pretty thoroughly previously, everything seems to be just fine. The truck runs and drives great, just doesn't seem to be getting the mileage it should. Another question though, can you tell if an 02 sensor is bad by means of a visual inspection? I took the second one out just to look at it, and there is a prong on the end that is broken in half, don't know if that affects it at all or not?

Did you get better milage before ? Your sensors could be a little off, but that's about the milage I'd expect from a 4x4 extracab with the 5.2. There's no disconnect in your front hubs, parasitic gear loss there all the time.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

When I first drove the truck back to Kansas from Dallas when i bought it I averaged close to low to mid 17 MPG. Even now it is still really variable, it's very perplexing. I can fill up with the same grade gas at the same station from one week to the other and get 12 with one tank and 17 on the next. More often than not though it's only 12,13,14 range. Any ideas of what could be cuasing such extreme differences?

Not really, basically the same. All of these numbers I have listed were when I was doing all interstate driving, 75 MPH. I don't even bother keeping track of my in town driving, the ol' lead foot shoots that all to crap anyway. I actually for awhile was getting better mileage in Montana over the summer driving at altitude, significantly higher than here in Kansas obviously. I'm really baffled, I may just have to break down and go to a mechanic and ask for some help :(

I recently changed my front o2 sensors @ 60,000 miles and it greatly improved my mileage and performance. Mine cost about $160 for the front pair.

I wouldn't change the rear ones unless you have too because they do not provide information for engine management.

14.63 @ 91.8

Well the rear O2 sensor does provide engine management readings or it wouldnt serve a purpose...the rear O2 sensor..behind the cat is the one that is throwing the code on my Durango..and giving me crappy mileage. Check them all.

Some people have said just remove it and clean it good and see if that helps..but it seems to me with that many miles you should prolly just replace it.

Thanks everyone. I am in the process of redoing my exhaust as we speak, I have no idea how old the cat and muffler are. Decided to get the new sensors while I was at it, both of em. After I get the tranny back in and everything back together, we'll see if I get better mileage. Actually, first I have to see if I can get 'er running again, then we'll see on mileage.
