Subject: Help - Replaced Head Gasket IP: Logged
Message: I spent the weekend installing a new cam and heads on my Dakota. I have a supercharger and used the Cometic head gaskets. Everything appeared to be fine except there seems to be some antifreeze seeping between the head and block on the drivers side. The heads and block were clean and smooth before reassembly. has anyone used Cometic head gaskets?
Per the manufactures recommendation I did not use any sealer on the water passages. I also did not use any thread sealer on the head bolts. I don't remember whether the gaskets sealed around the head bolts? If not perhaps I am getting water past the head bolts?
Thoughts on correcting this? I torqued the heads in 3 steps (50lbs, 105lbs, and retourqe @105 lbs) and did the intake to 12 lbs in 4 steps.

Message: scott.... You never mentioned if you cleaned the threads on your bolts really good and more important the threads in the block with a thread chaser or at least running a bolt in to the hole several times to make sure the bolts do not bind while torquing > Aso the head bolt threads need to be lubed to prevent binding > Any or all of these things can very well give you false readings on your torque rench leaving you with improper torquing of the bolts leading to leakage > If you have external leakage I would be more concerned you may also have internal leakage > Watch your radiator for signs of bubbles or over heating the water because of exause gasses getting in the antifreeze and watch oil to > Oil well get a grey look to it after engine runs a while indicating antifreeze in the oil > If this happens shut it down and keep it shut down till the problem is fixed

Message: Yes, I used new bolts and cleaned the threads out with a tap in the block beforehand. Also used antisieze on the bolts. I just noticed the coolant drips late last night and have not had a chance to check the oil yet.
Bacially looking for items to check before tearing it apart again.

Message: I work for KRC performance and we use cometics all the time. You need to a good finish on the surface of the heads and block. Also, spray the gaskets with mopar gasket sealant to make sure they seal good. Make sure to use ARP head studs because the stock bolt just dont pull down on the head hard enough. If you have anymore questions give us a call at 321-635-8866.

Message: Thanks Kev, I retorqued the head bolts (they were around 85-90 lbs). If that doesn't solve the problem I will tear it apart and use the ARP head bolts and gasket sealer. Sure was a bunch easier to work on when the engine was torn down....
