Subject: "Blow" me! supercharger, or turbo? IP: Logged
Message: hehe... does anyone know whether anyone makes a turbo for the 5.9 GAS engine? I've seen that their are some stock for the 5.9 cummins....
I have a 01 R/T, and am trying to decide to either get a supercharger or a turbocharger... first, I'm dumb, what the f is the difference? I've heard turbos make more power, and are more efficient... all I see out there are superchargers, ATI, vortech, kenny belle, etc... doesn't anyone make a turbo for the R/T?

Message: Matt,
Depends on what you want and how much you have to spend in addition to your mechanical knowledge. If you want a simple bolt-on project, get a supercharger. If you want all out torque and power, get the turbo, hands-down. Way less parasitic loss, way more power per pound of boost. I have an ATI Procharged R/T and a turbo on my 4.7. I would take the turbo any day over the supercharger. A complete supercharger kit will cost around $4500. A complete one-of turbo, probably 6-7k+ retail.

Message: I'm a mechanic. and I was studying to be an engineer. tech install should be no problems, either way... I have my "teenage" project car, a 1965 coupe that I've built myself, from bottom to top, I'm selling that off soon, so the cost isn't too much of concern to me.... what I am concerned with is WHO makes a turbo set up for the 5.9 gas engine. ... whered you get that turbo for your 4.7? I was thinking of the intercooled ATI kit, but wanted to compare that to whatever turbos might be available, but haven't came across any yet....

Message: IdahoRT, nice truck, i've seen it down at the BSU parking lot. I've got the red extend cab dakota with 18's and cuda stripes, not sure if youve seen it or not. saw your poster at idaho speed center too. i've only got a 3.9 v6 in mine (for now) but im planning to do a swap sometime in the future (either a built up 4.7 or a 408 stroker). sweet truck!

Message: Yea, awesome truck! You probably don't remember, but the guys at Idaho Speed Center told me you were going to be working on your truck there on a Saturday several months ago I came by and you gave me the full tour. Sweet! Man, what I would give for ride in that beast!

| RE: forced air induction IP: Logged
Message: Matt,
Full name of a turbo is 'turbosupercharger'. A "turbo" is powered from exhaust gasses.
The other 2 basic systems of "superchargers" or "blowers" are belt driven (read as 'crank driven'). One type is centrifugal and the other is positive displacement.
The turbo and centrifugal types have an impeller that acts somewhat like a water pump to grab air and force it into the engine. The positive displacement type has a set of 'screws' that compress the air between the lobes of the screws and force it into the engine. With either system, the air charge is forced into the engine rather than being pulled into the engine by the vacuum produced by the piston traveling downward in the cylinder. (Hence, 'forced air induction).
A centrifugal blower will bave boost begin around 3,000 RPM. A positive displacement blower (Roots or Whipple type) will have all boost available about 2,000 RPM. If you want gobs of power at the low end, the only name for a kit is Kenne Bell. This would be for towing and bottom end grunt. If you're looking for high RPM and flat-out power, Vortech, Paxton, ATI &tc. are some of the better names in kits.
Decide your use and the research. Call the manufacturers and suppliers, but expect them to tell you what you want to hear. (I called a centrifugal manufacturer and had one tech tell me the truth (!!!??!!!), that I needed a positive displacement for best towing results. A salesman told me different, and upon more research I decided the salesman was lieing to get a sale).
If all your playing is 3K and above, the centrifugal, either belt or exhaust is the ticket to fun. If like me, you want off the line gonads and low rpm pulling power, Kenne Bell is the way to go.
Check web sites and look at dyno information. Talk to people who have done it and get their reaction. Ask why they did the dirty deed and if they're happy with the results. Research is fun and informative.
I'm saving for the K-B. Spend your money (kit for about $4K) carefully.
