Subject: Air intake hose IP: Logged
Message: Okay, i bought a cold air intake a while ago and installed it. I nocticed 2 extra things on the metal arm, which both have rubber things on them. I then noticed a hose coming from the cylinder heads below. Am i supposed to hook this up to it, or not. I don't know, so I have not yet done it. Any help would be great.

Message: first, what size engine?
second, what type cold air? K&N, air raid, etc/
YES! the hose thats coming off the valve cover is for PCV. Positive Crankcase Ventilation. if you don't the blowby gases will be residual in the crankcase, which can form hydrogen based acids... destroys oil and metals faster... I tried first hand on an engine running with no PCV.. oil was nasty by 2k miles, and after 40k ended up having to rebuild. those gases are nasty, and if not excavated from the engine will cost you in the long run... hook up the hose.

Message: wow, im glad I askjed then, and ive only had it on for about 2,000 miles.
I have a 2000 3.9L V6.
I bought the cold air intake from EBAY cuz my friend told me it will do its job as well as anything else, but for less money.
So the foot long, soft, black hose coming from the cylinder head should be connected to the intake? What about the other cylinder head?
Do u have pictures, or know where I can see any if its possible.
Thanks so much Matt. Any further comments will be appreciated everyone! Thank You!

Message: now, is this hose coming off the cylinder head? I'm confused... don't you mean off the valve cover? I'm familiar with the 3.9, but I own an R/T, the 5.9... pretty much the same setup, minus some cubic inches...one hose (from the valve covers) should go into the intake tube... this is the one that sucks in the air, so it NEEDS to be filtered, or its sucking in dust (into the engines crank case.. Sorry I was tired when I first responded, you wouldn't have hurt your engine the way Idid on my 65 Stang...) it just wouldve been sucking in debris and dust, ruining your oil faster.... sorry for my F. up... the other side should go to the side of the intake manifold... IF your's is set up the same as mine, the passenger side is the one that goes into your cold air tube, and the drivers side should be attached to the intake.. lemme check my haynes for the 3.9,,,,no picture... but if memory serves me, I'm pretty sure thats right..

Message: i beleive thats completely right.
Thank you so much.
Ive now relocated the black hose from the old factory air hat to a metal stem from the cold air intake. I then pcovered up the old air hat cap. Is this right?
Thanks

Message: I just installed a round air cleaner on my '03 CC w/ 3.9. It has a hole in the bottom for a tube, but in order for the stock tube from the valve cover to fit, it would be right smack in the middle of the throttle linkage. My mechanic told me this is NOT a PCV valve, but just a breather, and that the little breather filter I put on it is fine. I sealed off the hole on the bottom plate of the air cleaner with a rubber cap and zip tied it on. I positioned the plate so that the cap is facing the back of the engine, out of sight, out of mind.. I was told the PCV valve is internal. Anybody got a second opinion on this?

Message: yeah, the one on the air hat is a breather, the pcv should be on one of the valve covers, with a hose that runs to the intake... as far as an internal pcv, I've never heard of one, doesn't mean it doesnt exist, but that;d make replacement kinda difficult... check with a repair manual for "pcv replacement" if in doubt!

Message: so the hose that runs from the valve cover to the air hat is the breather? it comes from the valve cover on the rear of the passanger side that runs to the air hat. it now has a breather filter instead of the hose running to the air hat. I should just get ahold of a camera and take a picture of it.
