Subject: air filter mod IP: Logged
Message: Hey everybody I would like to introduce myself and my truck. I'm Matthew and I drive an '03 Dakota SXT 4x4 with a 3.9L V6 and 5spd manual. The truck also has the heavy duty suspension and tire and handling package from the factory.
I'm working on my first mod, one of those cheap cool air intake systems from ebay. I installed the system, liked the sound and the added power up past 2500 rpms. I noticed the rubber elbow was caving in on the bottom from the weight of the filter on the end of the 3" pipe. That gave me the idea to do away with that section of the intake all together. I fit the cone style air filter right to the intake on top of the throttle body. I found that if I angle it forword just a hair I can keep it away from the AC unit. I found an increase in my low end power. I'm punching second gear and breaking the back end loose before I'm at 2500 rpm where the system would just start adding power. Anybody have any comments, info, or suggestions on putting the air filter directly onto the throttle body housing?
Thanks,
-Matthew

Message: I don't know why putting the air filter closer to the throttle body would give you any more power unless the cold air intake that you had before was really poorly designed.
Cold air does add more power, so if you want it to be cold and have the filter on top of the throttle body, go to WWW.RAMAIRBOX.COM and they can hook you up with what you want.

Message: I just threw away my cheap ebay cool air intake. you get what you pay for. In 3 months of running it my throttle body got dirty as hell. Between cheap filters they sell you and all the weight you have leaning of the air box you end up getting dirt wisps on the far sied of the gasket and the butterflies. If you like the sound and performance you should cough up 220 bucks and get the k&n kit with the heat shield and support braket. It is very nice and a far better design.

Message: how would one of those round open element cleaners compare to the stock setup? or to a k/n drop-in?
(as far as performance and cold air availability)

Message: this round air filters got me thinking... how tall a filter can I fit under the stock hood comfortably, and what kind of rise or drop should I get for the bottom? I've searched back and the only info I found on round filters was some other guy running a 14"x4" filter. If anybodys actually got one of these style filter assembilies, what do you think?

Message: I put a 14x3 on mine, and there was plenty of room for a taller one. The 3.9 and the 5.9 are about the same height, so it should fit. There was room for a 4" filter, but I already had the 3" sitting on the shelf.
More power? Maybe. About 1mpg better on the highway. Sure was noisy, though. So I switched to a remote CAI, which works about the same and is a lot quieter (but a lot more expensive).

Message: I just did a little measuring and theres no way a 14" round filter will fit on top of my '03 3.9 v6 I've been poking around a little more and found a post where somebody said they had a 10"x2" on theirs and it barely fit under the stock hood. Also people say its loud, and will suck hot air from a stop with the stock hood. I could really care less about it being loud, but if I'd get similar performance at lower sound levels staying with the 6x9" cone filter, I'd rather save the $30 or whatever for a muffler... probably not a bad idea either way but I'd like to finish one thing before I start another.
also thoughts on bolt on hood scoops or vents?

Message: regarding heavy intake tubes letting air in: why not just fab up a bracket where you need it to support the thing? They are easily made out of aluminum strips.

Message: why fix a bum setup? I like the idea of air coming in from all directions, not to mention fewer turns the air makes, the better.. right? The round air filter makes sence to me. As far as it being too loud? its a truck. I used to drive a full size gmc jimmy with a 6.2 diesel with dual exhaust. I remember having the radio at full blast on the highway just to hear it. but anyways.... I'm going to try out the round air filter once I get a little more info on dimentions that'll fit on my '03 3.9 v6 with a stock hood. I'd rather not play musical air filters with the store.

Message: I installed a Good Hood ramair hood on my '97 5.2 dakota. It came with a 14"x2" K&N filter. It fit under the hood without any problems. However, when I installed my 125hp nitrous system, I had to fabricate a 2" spacer under my throttle body to accomodate the jets. That pushed my filter up through the hood into the ram air opening. That added bonus was that now if you look into the scoops, you can see about a 1" of airfilter meaning it is catching that much more cold air. I would not see any problem installing this size air filter with an original hood. However, you give up some of the added flow benefits with the hot air inside your engine bay.
