Subject: Performance Headers???? IP: Logged
Message: If I were to put some Mopar PPH or an aftermarket type header on my 99 RC 318. How would clearance issues go as far as trying to take things out like replacing the head gaskets or transmission or what Im asking is Would I have to pul the motor just to put these things on? Has anyone tried this install and how painfull is this???
Thanks!

Message: You do not need to pull the motor to put the headers on. You should also be fine on pulling the heads after the headers are installed. I have not heard of any clearance issues at all on the GenIII Dakotas. Some headers do make auto transmission fluid changes a little more difficult since it is more work to drop the pan. Worst case you just have to disconnect the Y-pipe.

Message: I put Mopar headers on with out any problems, The hardest thing was getting the bolts and studs out. Run your truck for a bit and use penatrating oil to get them out. I had to use a vise grip and slowly work the studs out while applying lube. Its a two man job. Make sure you wipe them clean before starting up. I made that mistake and some stains burnt in.

Message: I reccomend the pph headers. Plan on spending a day to get it all in. The passenger side is the worse because the motor offset to the passenger side. The only thing I will warn you about is what cdak said, be sure you have the headers extremely clean before you start the truck for the first time. Also be sure to follow the tightening instructions and recheck the bolts for the first few weeks. Craftsman makes a cool little ratcheting wrench that makes install/tightening easier.

Message: For a 5.2L, a single 3" works well--- going more than that can hurt your low end performance--- all depends on what mods you plan on doing, and what you have done.
My little 5.9L w/small valve RT heads and small cam, M1-2bbl, Crower valve train, PPH headers w/Y pipe and 3" exhaust--- 300 rwhp, 348 torque... ran a 13.507 @ 102.60 in PHX 2 weeks ago.
that's with the stock cat in place too--

Message: DAMN!!!!! So I if buy this setup would everything completley mount up right and i wouldnt have any custom work to do other than frustration. Will i notice a power difference and sound difference. I would only hope this would give my truck a more aggressive sound. I can spare a day but not more than that I have college and work to go to. BTW What about some headers i see on ebay from S.S. Autochrome. They seem aufully cheap for headers but have not had any experience with them?
Thanks!

Look down the page a bit further and you will see a pair of cheap headers for sale. The dents in them are a good indication of how much trouble the guy had fitting them. They might all look the same, but they don't all fit the same and some are made of inferior material. Stainless steel ones are a good example. Depending on the grade used, you could end up with badly warped flanges once they heat up. Stainless can be really bad that way.
