Subject: 96 Dakota 4cyl. swap question IP: Logged
Message: Hello all, I have a 1996 Dakota 2wd that was born with a 2.5 litre 4 popper,w/ a 5spd standard tranny. Well, a few days ago, the crank,a few rods, etc. decided to come out and see the daylight through a football sized hole in the side of the block. The problem is, all of the local junk yards are telling me that the engine this truck needs is a "'96 only engine" and this is very hard to come by, and when found is very expensive. I need to know what some of my options are, I want to keep the 5spd. Can I either use an older 2.5, or will a 3.9, or a 318 bolt right up to the tranny? and what all parts would I need to complete this swap? also, are Jeep engines Compatable? Thanks! Norm

Message: Jeep engines? Depends which ones. If they have a Dodge counterpart, like the 5.2 or 5.9, yes. Not sure about the 4's, and they have, in the past, used inline 6's. You DO NOT need a '96-only engine. The key is to match the electonics to the engine. In other words, if you wanted a direct swap, you can use an older version of the same engine with your stock injection and electronics. You could use a 1968 vintage 318, put the Magnum heads and intake on (and fuel system), along with all the 1996 OBDII electronics for the 318 and it'll work like it was an OEM piece. As far as I can tell, the trannys will bolt up, but I have not dealt with the 4 cylinder units. On the AX-15 (light duty, so baby it with a V8), the smaller the engine, the smaller the clutch used, but the differences are minimal. If you increase cylinders, you'll need the appropriate engine harness and computer to run more injectors, as well as the flywheel for the engine to be used...the crank sensor reads the notches on the flywheel to fire the engine, and if you try to used the 4 cylinder flywheel on a six or V8, it'll never work. There are some other little things, but as for 1996-specific engines? Don't fall for that.

Message: I am guessing that junk yard guy is full of crap. Becouse as far as I know I would be the Chrysler 2.5 and not the jeep 2.5. I can not think of a reason dodge would put a "special" 2.5 in a dakota for just one year but who knows I have heard stranger things. Can you discribe the engine? Is it throttle body injected? Let me know and I will keep looking for info.

Message: That engine you have in your 96 Dakota is identical to the Jeep Wrangler 2.5L 4 used from about 86 to 2000. It will bolt right up. Just keep the electronics you have. DO NOT get a 2.5L from a 95 and earlier Dak. Those are the K car based motors and are completely different.
