OK, so....

I added to an otherwise factory-stock 4.7 a Gibson single side-swept exhaust - completely WELDED, instead of the cheap-ass clamps, and fabricated a "home-brew" intake using 3" ABS (all joints fully sealed) and a "Powerstack" open-end
filter from Intenseperformance. The only thing left to do (later tonight) is to fab a connection for the air hose that fits to the valve cover vent.

I feel zero difference in HP, and a consideable amount of torque LOSS. It now takes much longer to accelerate! Do I need to reset? Add the 3923 Autolite plugs?

The is maddening.... I'm beginning to think that I should've just left it alone.

Welcome to the club! These things are so highly tuned from the factory that anything that changes the operating parameters just screws it up. Resetting the computer will help some but they don't react/respond to mods like anything I have ever seen. Just about everything I have done to mine has slowed it down. So far my cat-back exhaust looks like it cost me about 3 tenths and 1.5 mph at the racetrack. I really like the sound but don't like the performance results.

No idea whats up. Everything I have done to mine has made a very nice difference. Dont think that I have gained a bunch of HP, a little but not a BUNCH, but I can tell a really nice gain in torque. Try reseting the puter and see what happens. It will relearn itself over time but resetting it will do it faster. I reset mine after installing my Jet chip and TB spacer and it still took about 50 to 75 miles of driving fo rit to really get completely relearned. Other than that I have no idea whats up. You should have gained a little more torque if nothing else.

I agree with Hawkeye. Reset the computer, then make sure you do some wide-open throttle runs. When I put my gibson single side swept and the airaid on, I didn't reset the computer and I didn't notice any improvements at first either. The main thing I noticed was a hefty bog on the 1-2 WOT shift. Over time, the computer learned, and it started to feel a little sharper off the line with a very noticeable increase in power from 3000 on up.

Well, I've reset the computer, and completed the PCV? hose connection. Now I'm driving around with an extremely heavy foot (yeah, THAT'S hard to do!), and I'm seeing a good deal of improvement - of HP, anyway, but I still don't feel the TQ that I thought I would. I should be able to "light 'em up" from a dead stop without using the brake pedal, but it's still not happening.

Guess I'll need to figure out another mod or two.
Funny how it's never enough.

Could just be that your tires are just grabbing really well and thats why they wont break loose. Guess thats both a good thing and a bad thing.

hey Broeheem...maybe get a set of 3.92
gears.

I just pick up my '01 QC 4x4/4.7/auto/3.92LSD/
T&H last Tuesday. My truck is bone stock, with
barely 150 miles on the odo. I have no
problem lighting em up from a standstill
without the brake. I can even break the rear
end (both tires) loose mid corner, even after
taking off smoothly, and this is with the wide
265/70R16's! This think ROCKS!!!!

Anyhow, my point is if you miss the
torque...multiply where it counts...at the
wheels....

I test drove a QC 4.7 with the 3.55 (open rear
end though) and with those gears, it just
seems to struggle a little more.....with the
3.92, truck revs much more freely and
effortlessly.

Good luck,

Cheers,
Luc

I had a '97 CC 5.2 3.55s that would light up the tire(s) at will. My new '01 QC 5.9 3.92s w/ limited slip just launches off the line w/ no spin whatsoever. Maybe just the LSD doin it's job????

My '98 CC has 3.55 gears and an open differential (hate that open differential)...and I have to try, make an effort not to spin.

First off, you about gave me a heart attack when you said you're exhaust didn't do anything. I had just gotten my Gibson from Bernd the day before and was hoping for some nice gains. Anyways, I was glad to here a day later that you were seeing a good deal of HP gains!

Anyways, I've always said most mods help with that rush to the redline feeling (i.e. HP )but probably do very little for TQ at 1000 - 2000 rpms. In your case, the intake would probably do nothing for TQ and the exhaust would help a little (5-10 Lbs/Ft of TZ between 1000 - 2000 rpms).

However, theere are some mods that would make a difference.
1. PCM upgrade or Bernd Box (for 35$ I'd go with Bernd Box).
2. Gears = 3.92 However, your mileage will probably go down by about 10-12% and others on the board have had quotes of close to $1,000 for swapping their 3.55s for 3.92s.
3. ***This is the tire shredder*** I have no personal experience with this one but from what I've heard on the boards, check into a performance torque converter. The standard torque converter multiplies your engines torque by 2.5. Some performance converters multiply the engine torque by 3.5 plus they have high stall speeds setup for them. This might cost about $1000 as well, but I think you'll get more out of this than the gears and keep your fuel economy when your not on it.

I have a 01 QC 4.7L auto 3.55 LSD and currently can't break the tires loose on dry pavement either. However, I consider this a good thing! We'll be able to do more mods before we have to worry about getting the power to the ground.

Happy Trails!

Jeke, I love my jet chip. When I went to the 32's I lost a little off the line but with the jet, I have to be careful again about how hard I get on the gas. Back up to par again.
