Message: If you search, you will find unlimited suggestions on this topic. Some of the most common are: plugs, new intake, opening up the engine (more free flowing intake and exhaust), synthetics, moving IAT, P&P on TB and Intake, etc. Some of these make a difference, some don't, everyone has their opinion. I say, pick something you want to try, something cheap preferably, and try it. If it works, great, if not, go back to the way it was. The fact is these engines like gas. They aren't made for family vacations across the country, so you can't expect 30mpg. On the other hand, there are simple things that you can do to increase your mpg slightly. Just be careful that you aren't spending much more on the mod then you will save in gas. Sometimes you can end up with something that will take you several years to recoup the costs. That's my .02 anyway...

Put the factory stat back in there and start using the synthetic oil
that I mentioned earlier if you are not already doing so.

Don,
Years ago I used Mobil1 too and then I tried AMSOIL. The
vehicle that I used it in (1987 D-150) got much better fuel
economy with the AMSOIL.

Message: Don, you didn't say what it was you were driving, or maybe I just missed it.
Are you trying to tell me, that you can feel a HP increase from a 180 T-stat. I did the 180 stat years ago. I did it cause of no belt cultch/fan on my 4.7, and overall the engine life should be better.
BS flag being waved on the added HP, sorry
It you have the dual fan set up factory, loose the belt driven fan/clutch. Then you'll feel an actual dynoed increase, albeit, a small one.

Message: simple. don't step on the gas pedal. or buy a honda. ride a bike. this Increase MPG question is asked too often..... ITS A TRUCK .... Gas prices SUCK.... we're ALL SUFFERING... Try driving a 5.9... I only drive my R/T maybe 5 minutes to work and some weekend cruising, still goes through gas like theres no tomorrow.... BTW< that throttle body spacer does NO GOOD for (at least) the 5.2 or the 5.9... ever seen the underside of the intake? its a huge gaping hole. and no fuel goes into the TB< so it's not helping keep anything especially cooler.
rant over, sorry....
ON a honest side, its a pure trade off. all those mods that IMPROVE performance and drop weight, if done properly and used EFFECTIVELY ( if you can keep yer Damned foot off the gas) can improve fuel econoomy, if you don,t use em properly, you've not only spent money or parts, but also more on gas too. stay away from higher lift cams, of course, but other mods like a tranny cooler for automatics can imporve tranny life and performance, and insures decent Fuel economy, roller rockers, Polishing the TB, AND FOR GODS SAKE MAINTAIN IT!!!!@ oil changes, spark plugs, etc... all the things that degrade an engine or the vehicles mechanical parts over time.....I see so many cars a day that just simply arent maintained, and all that affects MPG, ALignment is a pretty big one (think about it, if your front tires are dragging due to improper alignment, then is wasting gas) ..tires, Suspension components like tire rods and the shocks and stuts, condition of the transmission, tire pressure, ya get muh point!?!?!?! NOT just the engine alone affects MPG.......
sorry, I'm fresh outta work, and a bit hyped up... I had a guy lower an alignment rack with a Licoln on my foot earlier, I'm in a lill' pain....

Message: Here is an idea, Mofinwiley recently put the Keiser 6 speed in his truck and he can now get 26 MPG on the highway in 6th gear.
Why? Gear Ratios.
Wanna save gas and not spend a fortune on a Keiser's extra gear? Put a 2.78 Rear end in your 4.7L Dakota. These trucks make tons of torque down low so they can take it, I drive my 4.7L in 5th gear at 35mph all the time just for kicks.
Now you say... oh I want to tow with my truck to, then ditch the truck and get a Saturn.

I guess I should have put it this way. When I went to a 180 t-stat on my 4.7 manual tranny, years ago, I really couldn't feel any difference.
I guess my but dyno isn't as sensitve as yours
:-)
I mainly did it when I took off my belt clutch/fan, so it would run alittle cooler anyway, which is usually a good thing.

Message: After reading everything here regarding improving mileage on the 4.7L V8 engine it's probably true that lightening the truck is the only way to improve things drastically. My 88 Mustang 302 gets 18-20mpg with 3.55 gears. Of course, it's only 3200# versus much more for the QC.
14/18 is the sticker for my 2004 Quad Cab. I travel 15 highway miles one way to work at 70-75mph in 2WD. The rest is small town driving in Central NY.
Some stats:
2266 miles driven on 7 tanks of gas:
Avg: 14.3 mpg
Best tank: 15.45 (tail gate down)
Worst tank: 13.39 (towed 2800# part of tank)
No tonneau
No sythetics
Stock air filter
Next comes a tonneau cover and Amsoil synthetics for the engine. Amsoil for the tranny and gear boxes will come before winter. Hopefully I'll get a few thousand more miles in before I start towing the sleds around.
I'm not going to blow $$$ on parts to get my mileage up. The majority of my driving is highway and I'm nowhere near 18mpg because those numbers come from Dodge tests at 55mph (I believe).
It's a truck. Mileage sucks. Get another famliy vehicle with 30+ mpg that can balance out your gas consumption overall.
P.S. FACT: lower temp thermostats cool your engine but gas consumption goes up when you do this. Better life for the engine, though.
