Subject: Best way to gut cat- on vehicle? IP: Logged
Message: 2001 V6. I want to gut the third cat (the one after the y pipe). What do you guys think is the best way to go about this that equals the least amount of work for someone doing this in their driveway who can't weld?
The best way I've come up with is to cut the pipe behind it about 1.5" back from the cat and jab at it's insides with a crowbar until I've gotten all the material out, but do you think this will leave some material in "hard to reach places" inside the cat, that will eventually fall out and clog my muffler?
Please don't lecture me as far as how illegal this is, the cat either needs to be replaced or removed, and for my purposes the cat is useless anyway.

Message: Sounds good. Run the truck after you poke around and rev it up a bit, should blow most of the material out.
Another way I've heard of, I saw it on this site, I think: Take a piece of redi-rod, small enough diameter to slip a short section of bycicle drive chain through and clamp it to the redi-rod with a nut on either side. Put the redi-rod in a drill and have at it. The swing of the chain should get into the hard to reach spots.
Good luck with your project. Ignore all of the negative feedback that I'm sure will follow.

Message: oh I'm not worried about that, I just didn't want the thread to get off topic. I originally wanted to put a glass pack in it's place but it seems that too will require welding, because there's a breacket about 1" upstream of the cat that would not allow me to use a clamp. My other concern with putting a glasspack there is that the packing may burn and also that it would retain too much moisture since it's the lowest point after the cats on the y-pipe.

Message: wow you guys are fast I didn't catch the last two posts. Why would I get a code? there's no sensor anywhere near that third cat. And please enlighten me on how this effects my freeze plugs. I'm honestly asking for answers, not trying to be a wiseguy. Thanks

That is a joke from another thread where some jerky said that moisture dripping on an exhaust manifold would make your freeze plugs corrode. Just ignore it.

Message: lol, I figured it was some kind of inside joke. So whats the deal with the computer somehow discovering that my cat is no more? I mean as long as I continue to use mufflers there should still be enough back pressure to keep the computer happy right?

In other words, you don't BREATHE.

Yes, ignore it until you face the $2,500 fine. Good luck selling the vehicle some day, and you get nailed for it.
Just put a legal high-flow cat on instead. There is not one reason you can cite for gutting it that can't be matched with using a high-flow cat.
