Subject: '97 Hypertech?
IP: Logged

Message:
I've got a 1997 5.2L 4x4 and am considering the Hypertech programmer. It's the only programmer that I see will work for my model year. I also have seen things written about the Mopar PCM or a custom flash, but I prefer to have the ability to reprogram or restore my PCM in case of problems. Maybe I'm being paranoid, but isn't that a legitimate concern? Are there any other pros/cons I should be aware of? My choices seem to be limited either way.
Thanks for any help!
Mark

I have the programmer for my '01 5.9 4x4. I love it. I should have done it a lot sooner than I did. Made a huge improvement in performance and driveability, and a slight improvement in fuel mileage. I tried both the 89 and the 91 octane settings. At 91, performance was not that much better than 89 (barely noticable), and premium fuel is darn expensive.

Last spring I drove out to MA from CO. Since I was on a steady cruise for over 2K miles, it made sense to reprogram to stock and use the cheap stuff and savce a little money. When I returned I re-programmed again to where I liked it. Also, if you're towing a heavy load in hot weather, you don't want it set to 91. I like having the ability to adjust top what I need at the moment.

The big thing is, if you take it to a dealer for ANY kind of work, reset to stock. Otherwise they will overwrite your performance program, and you now have a useless box.

Thanks for the post. I was wondering about the dealer overwriting the program. Wouldn't it be possible to just reprogram the PCM with the programmer after you receive it back from the dealer? Would this type of thing be an issue if I were to purchase the Mopar PCM, or is a sort of "return to default" thing? I guess since the Mopar doesn't have anything beyond "default", it's not an issue?
Thanks again,
Mark

As I understand the Hypertech, it works by exchanging programs. So when you use the box, it sucks up the factory program and stores it, and downloads the performance program. When you wan to change the program again, the box checks to make sure the expected program is there, and then swaps again. I'm sure it's more complicated than that, but you get the idea.
That prevents you from using the same box on 10 differant trucks.

If the dealer overwrites your program, then the box won't work any more. You can send it back to hypertech and they will will reprogram it for a fee, I think it was about 2/3 - 3/4 of the cost of a new box. So I carry the tuner around with me all the time. If it breaks down and I end up at a dealership or well equipped repair shop, I can reprogram back to stock in a hurry.

As for the Mopar PCM, it's a whole new computer. It is what it is. The only way to change it is to put the old one back in.

I found a great deal from "Automotive Accessories Connection" (accessconnect.com) for the Hypertech. It was $306 and $5 for processing. They didn't charge me for shipping. I haven't dealt with them before so I checked them out at bbbonline.org and they have no problems reported. The lady on the phone was quick and knowlegable. Their server is down now. I asked them about it and it's because of the hurricanes. It was up yesterday so I'm sure it's just temporary. I know we're always looking for good deals so I thought I'd share.
