Subject: I bought the Superchips tuner IP: Logged
Message: I bought the tuner from the recent fellow owner that posted the FS ad.
This is my first time using a gadget like this to get performance and I have only had a little use with it so far.
I was thinking about a Mopar PCM but I want to run regular and I tow a heavy boat from time to time as well as loading the HELL outta her pretty often :)
The tuner is very easy to use, but you can only use it on ONE vehicle. When I bought it I thought it would work on more then one and I could hook a bunch of you up with free tuning; sorry :(
A am running a full tank of 87, so I don't have info on the Towing or Performance settings except to say I tried them briefly and while in first under throttle I heard light pinging and stopped immediately and changed the program back to 87 octane.
I am running the 87 octane program and I am impressed. This tuner does more then I thought it would. I can't say I'd happily drop $400 on one, but the $200 I paid used is a good investment.
Initially I used the stock RPM limiter setting but I just tried the raised RPM setting and it is GREAT! It only raised it like 150rpm but the stock PCM had the truck pretty dead up there and the new flash has her making power. She also doesn't get as hiccupy shifting at the redline like before. I was against using that setting at first because I felt more RPM wasn't the answer on a stock truck, but I was wrong. It changes the management such that there is now good power up there. I'll bet a mild cam would combine with this tuner well. Hmm... :-)
Prior mods: Relocated IAT to intake tube; modded stock TB but did not yet remove the step in the bores. That's it. I plan to do my own cold air intake and I might try those Autolite plugs everyone raves about.
I have a 99 4x4 v8 CC with 3.55 posi spinning 31x10.5's. I used to drop the hammer from a light and get minimal chirp. Now the truck sidesteps as the rears both spin right away; NICE! Shifting is a hair crisper but not as quick as I had hoped for; very livable and streetable though. When I hammer her from like 50mph she responds with a better downshift and take off then before. Light throttle operation feels about the same, but she takes transition to passing much better.
Has anyone tried this tuner back to back with another tuner or PCM?

Message: given my info there is only one choice of engine; 318 (5.2L).
Just an update...
The truck is running so damn good! It's temps are a little cooler and mpg is actually UP! I thought I would lose MPG but apparantly not.
I did a ride to my Grandparents b4 the tuner, but with my little mods and I got an amazing 17.4mpg average. Previously, I would struggle to stay in the 14's. This was mostly highway and cruise set around 72,3,4. Yesterday (still on the 87 octane program), I pulled 18.4mpg on the same trip. The, I ran around locally and some local highways too and then drove home for a daily total of 220miles; 17.3mpg avg!!!!! This is insane :) I love it :) The performance on the highway is improved greatly too. She moves now when you go to drop the hammer from 70-75 and pass someone. Shifts continue to be improved slightly and the timing of shifting is much better for both light throttle and WFO.
I am more impressed now then before!

Message: Wal, I may be mistaken but I think you can call
the maker of that programmer you bought for 200
bux and tell them you're the new owner. I believe
they can give you some codes to punch in and then
it's like a new one again. There may be a fee for
this.
It's worth a phone call... Good luck

Superchips has been lying to us 4.7L guys for the past year and a half. It got bumped because of the advent of the "HEMI" and I bet it will get bumped again when DC puts out something stupid like the "Super HEMI-HO SRT-8000 SLT Sport."
Put all your trust for aftermarket producers in one hand, and spit in the other... and see what you have more of come November.
(end rant).

Message: Opie..I feel ya buddy, however, there has been some credible information the 4.7 tuner is coming out soon, some credible sources in Florida claim to be the test vehicles for this vehicle, in credible I mean non-Superchip affiliated regular old dak owners. Hopefully, after all the lies from both Hypertech and superchips, superchips will come through. I'm not holding my breath but I'm definately keeping my fingers crossed.

We are currently working on it. I need to see if we need to see another one of these for test as we have already seen several of this exact year and model.

I have visited your website and do not see one offered for the Dodge/Jeep 4.7L engine. Do you not make one for this application or are you currently working on one?
If a donor truck is needed for testing, I live here in North Brevard and would be willing to assist.
I currently drive a 2000 2wd Dodge Dakota with a 4.7L engine and auto transmission.

Message: That is one thing I would buy for certain, a tuner if they ever make one for my beloved 4.7
Now. Thinking about how well the shifts improved on the 99 318. I would think maybe just the fact it had more power at shift made them more crisp? Isn't that transmission still almost 100% mechanical as far as shifts go? I know they have electronic selenoids for lockup and OD to engage, but it is still a valve body controlled tranny. Right?
I think improvement was from the increase in power at shift point.
After I swapped cams then soon after ported my TB my tranny started to shift pretty damn hard on my 5-45RFE. No mods were done to my PCM. I just have more power at redline. Of course maybe my PCM has increased line pressure or something to shift quicker due to the acceleration increase, etc. My truck actually jerks when it shifts. Very unlike the 46 RE whatever in my bro in laws 2000 RAM with the 318. He has a lot of trouble trying to dial in the shift points using the downshift linkage adjustment.
