Ok Kevin, I got one for you. A good friend of mine bought a brand new 5.2L R/C 5-speed Dakota back in 1998. He drove the truck hard as hell the whole time he had it, which was up until a week ago, and he never had the first problem out of it. Other than regular oil changes, brake pads and the basic preventatives that have to be done to any vehicle of course. The truck just turned over 150,000 miles and still runs very strong! The only reason he sold it was because he needed something with more passenger room in it. Now I can say that I am the proud new owner of this '98 Dakota that I bought without hesitation and with no regrets!

And by the way, the only mods on it are a homebrew intake tube w/ K&N filter, aftermarket Cat., and Flowmaster muffler. With these few mods, a set of slicks and 150,000 miles it ran a 9.42 1/8 mile just a few weeks ago. I'm not sure what that converts out to in a 1/4 mile but most of the Poopstains, oops I mean Mustangs, at the track that night were running 9.50's to 9.80's in the 1/8th.

I personally have owned a Nissan that I only changed the oil every 3k for five years. That all I did. No brakes,no tires,no other fluids. sold it with 96k and it ran like a tank. Toyotas can make the same claim. The only problem with these to manufactures are the looks of their truck suck. But performance and maintanence are superior. Go to your local dealer and drive Titan then Thundra, then the Ram. I will give DODGE the best looking trucks out there but see for your self in power and performance. Don't read about them, or hear from friend, test drive for yourself. Take a close look at this forum. Half the subjects posted are about problems with DODGE and the other are about more perferformance out of there slow DODGE, WHY?

Hi Kevin, no repairs to my '00; that close enough to 5 years old for you ? Original brakes, ball joints, you name it. I had to replace the clutch on a Toyota that wasn't as old. Just because someone wants to increase performance doesn't mean their rig is slow, either. People hop up motorcycles all the time and they don't start off slow. Sure people post about problems here, all brands, even the Japs, have problems. What do you want; should I start a post saying I don't have any problems, oh no, what should I do ? Does that give you some clue now why posts are about problems or improvements ?

I bet you have a gun rack on your back window. I have a great attitude and love life until I get in my DODGE. Then it is a roll of the dice. Until I reach my destination then it high times again. You people are to easy to aggreviate. It's just an automobile, You can't sleep with it it doesnt talk, has no feelings. Just get in the piece of s h i t and drive. I'm REALLY nuetral about DODGE to tell you the truth .It is just a truck. Some are good, some are bad, you live with it and move on. It was fun pissing your hard core truck lovers off though. For me, I have my 381 RWHP R/T for now and thats OK. But like all my automobiles it will be sold soon and upgrade to another vehicle. Probably won't be a DODGE though.

I forgot a little story I wanted to share with you all. There was this guy who had three mechanic friends that each worked at different dealers. The first mechanics worked at BMW. The second, Nissan and the third at Toyota. They all quit there jobs and I asked why. They responded with. " We arent making any money because the repairs are just not coming in, and when they do, they are minor." 2 now work for DODGE and the other went to FORD. They are happy to report that there finicial life is back on track.

It's nice to hear that Dodge and Ford pay these guys enough to get their lives back on track. I don,t blame them, I would quit working for those other worthless companies too.

'97 5.2L 4x4 extended cab with near 100K miles. I'm just now changing out the original brake pads. I also put in new rotors since I was at it, but I'm not sure I needed to. I also put 70K miles on the original tires. Other than that, nothing.
I love my truck and wouldn't trade it for anything else. It's been a rock.

Actually I've allways heard chevrolet this way...

Plain and simply all vehicles will have their problems depending on how their driven and how their taken care of... The only problem I've had out of mine that was actually what I could call a manufacturing problem was that after 80,000 miles, my speed sensor had to be replaced...

Another thing to think about is that if your building in more power like the 381 RWHP, is that your putting more stress on everything else, which I'm sure hasn't been upgraded to go along with the motor... You probably don't use an adequate motor oil either to put up with everything... It may very well be that you just have yourself a lemmon and as far as slow goes, you also have to keep in mind that these trucks are some of the heaviest small trucks on the market and to top everything off their ussually extremely high geared to get a decent fuel mileage curve...

My family, like most, has just about had all of the different makes of vehicles and to honestly put it, the dodge has shown the least problems out of all of them...

I think in your case Kevin, it just may very well be the driver if your having to worry about making it to destinations as much as you claim...

Yes, I have to agree w/ Greg. Most of my family and many friends are in the Dodges (18 that I've been able to count up at this hour) because they've been the most reliable overall. Not to say the other makes aren't any good, basically everyone puts out something fairly decent. So, after reading most all of the posts, I agree it is a driver thing JMHO.

I'm still waiting for my little truck to start coming apart, nothing happening, yet. It's such a boring little reliable Dak. Yep, it must be a driver thing.

Kevin, would you like some whine with your cheese?

1966 Plymouth Belvedere II - slant 6, auto, 170K miles on original engine, still ran great when I sold it.

1972 Dodge Dart - slant 6, auto, 174K miles on original engine and tranny when I sold it, still ran great.

1985 Dodge Daytona - 2.2L 5-speed, 157K miles on original engine and tranny when I sold it to the dealer for $1,000 (unheard of back then), still looked and ran great.

1992 Dodge Daytona - 2.5L 5-speed, 239K miles on original engine, clutch and tranny, still looks and runs great.

1992 Dodge Dakota - 3.9L V-6 4-speed auto, 131K miles on original engine and tranny, bought from my brother (original owner), looks and runs like new. Only major problem was a fractured distributor shaft at 55K miles. Almost no other repairs.

Contrast:

My dad's 1958 Chevy Bel Air, burned out valves at less than 70K miles.

My dad's 1966 Chevy Biscayne, frame broke once and was welded, transmission mount broke and was welded, frame finally rusted through and it was carefully hauled to the junkyard in 1977 with 87K miles on it.

My dad's 1972 Pontiac Grandville, lifters and cam shot at 85K miles. Spun bearing at 87K miles, sold to dealer for junk for $200 in 1981. Then..

My dad's 1979 Dodge Aspen - slant 6, auto. Bought in 1981 at 41K miles, traded in in 1989 with 141K miles on original engine and tranny, ran great, some rust on undercarriage.

My dad's 1989 Plymouth Acclaim - 2.5L 3-speed auto. Bought new, now has 127K miles on original engine and tranny, runs and looks like new.

If you hate Dodges so much, no one's holding a gun to your head. Just get lost and save us and yourself any more aggravation.

sounds like you've just had dodges that have all been raped on the road (not regularly maintained, double clutching, constantly redlined) and thats why you have bad opinions about the engines. I have a 00' Dodge Dak Sport and it runs like a top............my dad had a 88' Dak Sport and he got rid of it at 265,000 miles just because he had no use for a truck anymore and she still ran perfect.........there was a slight knock that was starting to be heard but nothing major
