Subject: Redline oil need help ASAP IP: Logged
Message: Hey fellas I just put 5 qts of redline into my 99 dakota R/T today. I also got the K and N oil filter just for the heck of it. The truck has 37,000 miles on it and the oil (10W40) seems to work somewhat better than the old stuff. There is one drawback though, I get some chatter at idle now, can not tell if it is a valve or what. Sounds like a slight ping, is this because I never used to run a full synthetic? I am a little weary, I think I may have wasted 35.00
Can you guys respond before I leave for work tommarow
Thanks,
John

Message: Check the oil level, if it is overfull you may get a tappet noise caused by foaming oil.

Message: If I remember reading the Summitt catalog right some of the Redline oils are not recommended for street use. I might be wrong and you might have a different type but I'm grasping at straws as to your problem. If it's holding ok oil pressure I would suggest that you see how it behaves tomorrow and if it is still doing it drain it and keep it in a clean container and replace it with another oil to see if the problem persists.

Message: I know this is an old post, but thought I would provide some input. I have run Redline 10W-30 and 10W-40 in a street driven car (albeit, driven very hard) for 100k without any problems.
When it comes to synthetics, Redline is the real deal. Unlike Mobil 1 which sells because most people get duped by their advertising.

check out this site about oil filters
I may be the valve in the filter causing inadequate lub at idle speeds, and startup.

Message: Hmmmmm, Mobil 1 is a joke then. So why is it when I go to Nascar craftsman truck series and winston cup series races and go threw the pits, just about every car and truck uses Mobil 1 synthetic. Hmmmmm I guess they must have really good advertising for them to buy into it. Or are they just stupid like me and everyone else for using Mobil 1?????

Message: Browsing thru I found this old post and I wanted to add my comments.
Although Red Line Oil is touted as a top-notch synthetic oil, oil analysis results show that, at least in passenger vehicle applications, it may not be formulated properly. Red Line oils are for TRUE racing applications.
On passenger vehicles (cars and trucks)it has been determined thru testing that when using Red Line there is excessive wear metal content, low tbn value, excessive oxidation percentage and Molybdenum levels which are "over range". These results would seem to indicate that after a fairly short oil drain interval the Red Line Oil used was showing unacceptable levels of oil degradation, and the Polyolester base stock seems to be reacting negatively with the aluminum and lead materials in the engine.
In addition, the "over range" Molybdenum levels indicated that Red Line may be using a solid extreme pressure additive in its oils. Although this may be useful (but is not necessary with top-quality basestocks) in RACING applications where metal components of an engine may be more likely to come in contact with each other, it is not necessary in a passenger vehicle engine and can actually be harmful to the engine. This would make sense, otherwise there would be no reason to indicate the levels of Molybdenum to be "over range".

Sleep318,
Next time you're in the pits, check the cars for any decals or markings with Mobil logo on them...
Remember... Race drivers are sponsored by such companies because the car & driver ARE THE ADVERTISING! Mobil and other sponsors provide their products to the teams as well as a large paycheck so they will label the car and the crowd will see the cars are using their product. As a result, people like you buy their product because your hero uses it in his car.
Don't forget, the NASCAR teams have multiple engines for their cars and these are rebuilt more often than your single engine. So the wear properties of the oil is less of a concern than the performance (ie, less resistance to pumping through the engine). No NASCAR car is expected to go 200,000 between rebuilds.

Message: I read a report about redlines short comeings a while back. I did some additional digging and found the following: They used the Redline Race oil in a daily driver to get the results they wanted. I doubt that the end result would have been the same if they had used Redlines API certified oil in the daily driver. Redline does not put detergents in the raceing oil and it is fortified with alot different EP and anti-friction additives then their API certified oil.

Message: doesn't necessarily mean that they are running that specific product. There are a lot of contigency awards out there and Mobil one may just be offering more $ at the time (I am a former racer myself). I have used redline in cars, trucks and my Harley. No problems. Use whatever you want but I'll stick with redline.

Sandman's post of 5/13/2002 is correct. I know they used Redline Racing Oil for the test in a daily driver. Not accurate numbers since we would never use their racing oil in our Dakotas.

Message: I know this is an old post but here's my two cents. I have never used Redline motor oil so I dont know anything about it suitability in a engine but Redline gear oil has cost me plenty.
I put redline in the quick change rear end on my pro-4 car and by the end of a 50 lap race the ring & pinion and the locker were burnt.
Afer taking it back to Speedway Engineering, they took one look at it and told me to NEVER put redline in either the rear end or the transmission as it just does not hold up to circle track abuse. Now I use nothing but Mobil1 and have not had a problem sense and the guys who run Amsoil never have any problems either.

I was an Amsoil user and then switched to Redline. Don't know why. I guess it was because I was racing and someone told me Redline was better for the track. The only time I have ever had a differential fail was about 10 months after I switched to Redline 75W-140 (normal gear oil variety). The thing just started getting noisier and noisier, ate a pinion bearing, then blew the front seal (vent was clear). FULL of metal. I drained and replaced the bearing, seal and put petroleum gear oil in. This did not fix it, damage done. I DO NOT know the ACTUAL cause of failure, and maybe it was indeed a pure coincidence. I just swapped a whole rear end in and no problems. I have since switched back to Amsoil, Series 2000 75W-140.

Message: Hey Fellas,
Well I sold that truck 6 months ago for an 03 Lightning but the dakota was traded in with 70,000 miles on it and still ran strong! No problems with the Redline oil, the noise at the time was a bad cat convertor. I will run Redline or Mobil 1 in my L, whichever one is easier to find.

If I were you I would choose an oil that is formulated for regular motorist driving conditions(normal passenger vehicle applications).
