Subject: cleaning piston heads/cylinders IP: Logged
Message: I have about 100K on my truck and have the cylinder heads off. When removing the heads some antifreeze got into the cylinders and there's a lot of carbon deposits. In addition, there is some remaining gasket material stuck to the deck. What is the best way to clean all of this?

Message: Very carefully. Carbon can be very hard, and difficult to remove. You have to be carefull not to damage the underlying metal. Pack some string around the piston to protect the rings, and use a sanding roll at slow speed to remove the carbon. Make sure you protect the rest of the open engine from dust and debris.
The gasket surface is a little easier. Use a gasket scraper and some gasket remover for most of it. Most shops sell a gasket cleaning disc to put in a drill motor, that works well.
It's a tedious pain in the behind job.
