Subject: Comp Cams 1.7 Rockers clearance?
IP: Logged

Message:
I'm just wondering if someone has direct experience with Comp Cams 1.7 RRs? I used a 2x4 on the stock valve covers to flatten the baffles and placed them back on. They seated decently, but it seems that the size of the rockers is causing the sides of the covers to hit. I slid the covers from left to right (when facing the engine) and it seems that the rockers are hitting inside the cover when bolt holes are aligned. Maybe it's just a matter of having to run the engine to get the lifters set properly, but it seems that there is very little clearance. Does this seem right?

Maybe I should clarify by putting it this way. I can move the cover about 1/8" past the bolt hole to the right, but when I try to move the cover hole to the right past the hole in the head, it just stops. I believe the cover is hitting the rocker arm which prevents it from moving further in that direction. This seems to be an awfully tight tolerance. Is this alright? How can I test for fit? I'm sure it will bolt down properly, but I don't want to screw the valve train. How would you test this?

Try laying the valve cover in place using two loose bolts, pull the coil wire and spin the motor over. Have someone see if the valve cover starts bouncing around from the rocker hitting it. I hope the rocker people wouldn't willingly sell you rockers that wouldn't clear stock covers. But you never know. Let me know if my suggestion works.

Great idea regarding the couple of bolts. I'll give it a try tonight and let you know how it works.

It is my understanding that 1.7's need taller vavle covers for clearance even thought they state you don't. I.e mopar "magnum" covers

Not sure on the comp camp 1.7 rockers, but the Crower 1.7 Rockers won't clear with the stock valve covers. You must either dimple in the oil baffle on the stock valve covers, or get some Mopar Valve covers (socaldakota.com and other places sell 'em, not too terribly expensive, and look nice!)

Yes you will have to buy new covers, its the only way it will work or remave the baffils out of the stock ones.

What, that's a bunch of bull... All you have to do is exactly what was mentioned in the original post and lay the valve cover down on a soft surface "as to not damage the outer surface of the valve cover", then take a 2x4 and knock the oil baffle down until there is just enough room for oil vapor and oil to get through... I even had to do this with the 1.6 crowers because I opted for the guide plates and the only reason you have to do this to begin with isn't necessarily for the rocking path of the rocker as it is for the adjustment nut on top of the rockers... The nut and locker in the nut are what the valve cover hits when you put it on...

As far as the rocker itself rubbing the valve cover, there shouldn't be anything to worry about there either because the nose pitch or the part of the rocker that pushes down on the valve stem is all that gets changed "to where it pushes down on the valve more/I.E. opening the valves more"... The rest of the rocker from the pivet back to the pushrods remains the same to the best of my knowledge, because it would have to to keep the correct "ride path" across the valve stem...

Oh and never completely remove your baffels or you will more than likely blow oil through into your intake while heavy acceleration is into play...
