Subject: 87 posi rear?

ok. i have an 87 4wd with the stock front and rear ends and gearing, i want to upgrade it. what can i do?

i would like to install a limited slip diff in the rear, do i have to install one up front too?

i know the the rear axle is a chrysler 8 1/4, but im unsure of the gearing. as for the front, i think it is the chrysler 7 3/4, and im unsure of the gearing.

would i be able to replace either of the axles with a stronger (dana) set up?

or can i atleast find new gears for them? i am goin to run 31x10s, and i still want to have some power off the line. ive looked all over with no luck for new front gears, i have how ever found gears for the rear.

what can i do here?

go with a higher number gear ratio[3.92s instead of 3.55s]will help the bottom end and mid range

all 8 1/4s from 96 back will work

for the front you,ll have to go used or DC
[i know of no one who sells gears or posi for the front]

dana and auburn make a posi unit[auburn would be my choise$350,but the dana unit is cheaper like $160,

you can change the rear to a 8 3/4 which is much stronger, you have to change the spring perches etc to put this in

the 8 1/4 is OK if you put the posi unit in,the spider gears and the axle pin are the problem spots

alright thanks vern...

that was the exact answer i was lookin for.

one thing tho...

on what vehicles should i look for the gears. for the rear, pretty much any older dakota or ram?as for the 7.25" gears?

would i be better off buyin a new posi unit, instead of tryin to find a used one?

thanks again
