Subject: I still don't get how this happens IP: Logged
Message: I got 25.244 gallons in my truck again. The gas needle was just touching the end of the "white line" in the gauge. Went into the store and asked when was the last time they had their pumps checked. The guy behind the counter said he would find out and give me a call, if I don't hear anything in a couple of days I will go back in and talk to them about it...
I figure I still had at least 1/2 gallon in the tank, when I filled up, so I'm looking at my tank, and fill spout holding almost 26 gallons...WTF...

Message: If the pump pressure is low, or the flow is slow, then I guessit could happen. I have seen tanks that sagged and allowed more to be put in before the pump would shut. But if you want to prove it to yourself, get your self a good gas can 1 - 5 gallon, and check it at home with a known measuring device to make sure that the line is accurate. Then go to the station, same pump and fill til' the pump says the amount that your can is, look at the "confirmed" fill line and no more loosing sleep. If you find it incorrect, then get on the phone to the weights and measures department in your area, and don't leave the station until they come. Just have the number handy before you get there. sometimes it is on the sticker on the pump, but it could be the state office number and not the local.

Message: Another thing:
I ALWAYS press the nozzle until it reaches 1 gal, then stop and check the price against the advertized. Then I stop at 5 gal and check again. No I am not paranoid, I have caught the wrongly advertized price many times. Maybe one out of twenty. And I do the gas can trick too whenever I need to fill my cans. But I have only found the gallon counter to be incorrect a couple of times in about 30 years. So it is not too common around here at least.

Message: I wouldn't count on the gas can test. A while back here in California there was an issue with stations toying with the computer on the pumps so that after a few gallons it would start to shortchange you i.e. pump in 10 gallons receive only 9 etc. It seems that the inspectors use a specific size can so they program to make sure it'll pass the test when someone complains. It took a couple of years for them to find out about this trick.
As to how to check your station's accuracy? Unless you want to fill up a big drum like 55 gallons I can't think of any easy way.

Message: go to different gas stations when you are at the "white line" then fill it up if one is way more then the others vote with your wallet and stay away.
